Abstract

An optical reflective device for reflecting light including a grating medium having a first and second grating structure is disclosed. The first grating structure may be configured to reflect light of a wavelength about a first reflective axis offset from a surface normal of the grating medium at a first incidence angle. The second grating structure may be configured to reflect light of the wavelength about a second reflective axis offset from the surface normal of the grating medium at a second incidence angle different from the first incidence angle. The second reflective axis may be different from the first reflective axis.

Claims (32)

1 . A head mounted display device, comprising:

a pre-distortion manager configured to produce a pre-distorted image by applying a pre-distortion to a set of pixels in an undistorted image, the set of pixels being proximal to an edge of a field of view of the undistorted image;

a light source configured to generate image-bearing light that includes the pre-distorted image; and

an optical system that includes a lens configured to receive the image-bearing light from the light source, wherein the lens is configured to direct the image-bearing light while producing a distortion in the image-bearing light, and wherein the pre-distortion is configured to compensate for the distortion produced by the lens in directing the image-bearing light.

2 . The head mounted display device defined in claim 1 , wherein the optical system comprises a waveguide and a holographic grating medium in the waveguide.

3 . The head mounted display device defined in claim 2 , wherein the optical system further comprises a set of volume holograms in the holographic grating medium, the set of volume holograms being configured to diffract the image-bearing light.

4 . The head mounted display device defined in claim 3 , wherein the set of volume holograms comprise an input coupler.

5 . The head mounted display device defined in claim 4 , wherein the set of volume holograms comprise an output coupler.

6 . The head mounted display device defined in claim 5 , wherein the set of volume holograms comprise a cross coupler.

7 . The head mounted display device defined in claim 1 , wherein the optical system is configured to direct the image-bearing light towards an eye box.

8 . The head mounted display device defined in claim 1 , wherein the pre-distortion comprises a blur kernel.

9 . A head mounted display device comprising:

a predistortion manager configured to produce an image;

a light source configured to receive the image from the predistortion manager and configured to produce image-bearing light that includes the image; and

an optical system having an optical lens that is configured to receive the image-bearing light from the light source and that is configured to direct the image-bearing light while producing a distortion in the image-bearing light, wherein the predistortion manager is configured to apply a pre-distortion to the image that compensates for the distortion produced by the optical lens.

10 . The head mounted display device defined in claim 9 , wherein the optical system comprises a waveguide, a grating medium on the waveguide, and a holographic grating in the grating medium that is configured to diffract the image-bearing light.

11 . The head mounted display device defined in claim 10 , wherein the optical system further comprises an additional holographic grating in the grating medium that is laterally offset from the holographic grating and that is configured to diffract the image-bearing light prior to diffraction of the image-bearing light by the holographic grating.

12 . The head mounted display device defined in claim 9 , wherein the predistortion manager is configured to apply the pre-distortion to at least one pixel along a periphery of the image.

13 . The head mounted display device defined in claim 12 , wherein the pre-distortion comprises a blur kernel.

14 . The head mounted display device defined in 9, wherein the optical system is configured to direct the image-bearing light towards an eye box.

15 . A display system comprising:

an optical system that is configured to direct light that includes an image towards an eye box while introducing a distortion to the light, wherein the optical system comprises:

a waveguide,

a grating medium on the waveguide, and

holographic gratings in the grating medium, wherein the holographic gratings are configured to diffract the light that includes the image;

a light source that is configured to provide the light that includes the image to the optical system; and

a predistortion manager that is configured to provide the image to the light source and that is configured to apply, prior to providing the image to the light source, a pre-distortion to the image that compensates for the distortion introduced by the optical system.

16 . The display system defined in claim 15 , wherein the optical system comprises an optical lens.

17 . The display system defined in claim 15 , wherein the predistortion manager is configured to apply the pre-distortion to a pixel at an edge of the image.

18 . The display system defined in claim 15 , wherein the holographic gratings comprise a cross coupler.

19 . The display system defined in claim 17 , wherein the holographic gratings further comprise an output coupler configured to diffract the light that includes the image towards the eye box.

20 . The display defined in claim 17 , wherein the holographic gratings further comprise an input coupler.
