Abstract

An intracranial pressure monitoring device includes a housing defining a first internal chamber, a plurality of strain gauges disposed on an inner surface of a diaphragm defined by a wall of the first internal chamber, a device for generating orientation signals, and circuitry coupled to the plurality of strain gauges and to the device. The circuitry is configured to generate intracranial pressure data from signals received from the plurality of strain gauges, generate orientation data based on the orientation signals received from the device, and store the intracranial pressure data and the orientation data in a computer readable storage such that the intracranial pressure data and orientation data are associated with each other.

Claims (31)

1. A method of determining intracranial pressure (ICP), comprising:

receiving signals indicative of the ICP;

generating ICP data based on the signals indicative of the ICP, receiving signals indicative of an orientation of the ICP device;

generating orientation data based on the signals indicative of the orientation of the ICP device;

associating the ICP data with the orientation data; and

determining the ICP based on the association of the ICP data with the orientation data.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting the ICP data and the orientation data to a separate device for determining the ICP.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising storing the ICP data and the orientation data in a computer readable storage.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining one or more position- related events.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the one or more position-related events is lying down, sleeping, falling, or running.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the signals indicative of the ICP are received from a first sensor, and the signals indicative of an orientation of the ICP device are received from a second sensor.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first sensor comprises a diaphragm configured to deform in response to the ICP.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the first sensor further comprises a strain gauge configured to detect deformation of the diaphragm.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the strain gauge comprises:

first and second strain gauges aligned with each other and disposed adjacent to a radial center of the diaphragm, and

third and fourth strain gauges aligned with each other and perpendicular to the first and second strain gauges.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first, second, third, and fourth strain gauges are electrically connected in a Wheatstone bridge.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the diaphragm defines a bottom wall of a housing.

12. The method of claim 11 , the housing further comprising a sidewall and a ridge, the ridge forming an interface between the bottom wall and the sidewall.

13. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first sensor further comprises a strain gauge configured to detect deformation of the diaphragm, the strain gauge located along an axis of neutrality of the diaphragm.

14. The method of claim 6 , wherein the second sensor i s configured to generate signals indicative of an orientation of the ICP device relative to a vertical direction.

15. The method of claim 6 , wherein the second sensor is an accelerometer.

16. The method of claim 6 , wherein the second sensor is a gyroscope.

17. The method of claim 6 , wherein the second sensor is located on a printed circuit board.

18. The method of claim 6 , wherein the housing includes a proximal portion and a distal portion such that, in use, the distal portion is received within a hole of a patient's head and the proximal portion is located outside the hole.

19. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving the signals indicative of the ICP and the signals indicative of an orientation of the ICP device for a period of time; and

associating the ICP data with the orientation data for the period of time.

20. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving the signals indicative of the ICP and the signals indicative of an orientation of the ICP device for a period of time; and

generating a pressure waveform for the period of time to determine the ICP based on the association of the ICP data with the orientation data.
