Abstract

A system and method for improving radio performance through automatic channel selection utilizing a closed-channel model is disclosed. A measurement engine records maximum user throughput on a per station basis during normal traffic operation. The measurement engine further records throughput metrics based on test traffic sent to all associated stations during idle operation. A policy logic engine utilizes the measurements to determine an optimal transmission channel for transmission and receipt of data.

Claims (38)

1. An electronic device, comprising:

one or more antenna nodes configured to couple to one or more antennas;

an interface circuit, communicatively coupled to the one or more antenna nodes, configured to wirelessly communicate with a second electronic device in a wireless local area network (WLAN);

a processor coupled to the interface circuit and memory; and

the memory configured to store program instructions, wherein, when executed by the processor, the program instructions cause the electronic device to perform operations comprising:

determining an actual throughput of a current transmission channel in the WLAN based at least in part on communication of data with the second electronic device;

measuring, on a per-channel basis, one or more test throughputs of one or more available transmission channels based at least in part on communication of test data with the second electronic device; and

selectively changing from the current transmission channel to an updated transmission channel in the one or more available transmission channels based at least in part on the actual throughput and the one or more test throughputs.

2. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the wireless communication is compatible with an IEEE 802.11 communication protocol.

3. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the measurement of the one or more test throughputs occurs during one of: an idle period of the WLAN; when utilization of the WLAN is less than a threshold value; when second data of a type of data is not being communicated with the second electronic device; or when the second data of the type of data is not communicated with the second electronic device during a time interval.

4. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the measuring comprises transmitting, addressed to the second electronic device, the test data in the one or more available transmission channels.

5. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the operations comprise computing one or more transmission channel quality metrics for the one or more available transmission channels based at least in part on the actual throughput and the one or more test throughputs; and

wherein the selective changing is based at least in part on the one or more transmission channel quality metrics.

6. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the current transmission channel is changed to the updated transmission channel when the one or more test throughputs are greater than the actual throughput; and

wherein the current transmission channel is unchanged when the one or more test throughputs are less than the actual throughput.

7. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the selective changing is based at least in part on a summation of the one or more test throughputs for multiple electronic devices associated with the electronic device in the WLAN; and

wherein the multiple electronic devices comprise the second electronic device.

8. The electronic device of claim 7 , wherein the summation is a weighted summation and at least one of the multiple electronic devices has a different weight from a remainder of the multiple electronic devices.

9. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the selective changing is based at least in part on a minimum throughput target for the second electronic device.

10. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the determining, the measuring and the selective changing provide closed-loop control of the current transmission channel.

11. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more test throughputs are based at least in part on modeling or a throughput estimation technique.

12. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the operations comprise performing channel probing; and

wherein the selective changing is based at least in part on the channel probing.

13. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the current transmission channel is changed to the updated transmission channel using dynamic frequency selection.

14. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the selective changing is based at least in part on a weight for at least one of: the actual throughput, or a test throughput in the one or more test throughputs.

15. The electronic device of claim 4 , wherein the weight is based on when the actual throughput was determined or the test throughput was measured.

16. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the selective changing is based at least in part on a weight for at least one of: the current transmission channel, or an available transmission channel in the one or more available transmission channels.

17. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the determining and the measuring are performed concurrently.

18. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more operations comprise selecting an antenna configuration based at least in part on the updated transmission channel.

19. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium for use in conjunction with an electronic device, the computer-readable storage medium storing program instructions that, when executed by the electronic device, cause the electronic device to perform one or more operations comprising:

determining an actual throughput of a current transmission channel in a wireless local area network (WLAN) based at least in part on communication of data with a second electronic device;

measuring, on a per-channel basis, one or more test throughputs of one or more available transmission channels based at least in part on communication of test data with the second electronic device; and

selectively changing from the current transmission channel to an updated transmission channel in the one or more available transmission channels based at least in part on the actual throughput and the one or more test throughputs.

20. A method for performing closed-loop channel adaptation, comprising:

by an electronic device:

determining an actual throughput of a current transmission channel in a wireless local area network (WLAN) based at least in part on communication of data with a second electronic device;

measuring, on a per-channel basis, one or more test throughputs of one or more available transmission channels based at least in part on communication of test data with the second electronic device; and

selectively changing from the current transmission channel to an updated transmission channel in the one or more available transmission channels based at least in part on the actual throughput and the one or more test throughputs.
