Abstract

A system that incorporates the subject disclosure may include, for example, a method that determines a pattern for a mouse pad, wherein the mouse pad comprises an electronic paper display and a processor and transmits the pattern to the mouse pad to enable the processor to present the pattern on the electronic paper display. Additional embodiments are disclosed.

Claims (42)

1. A method, comprising:

transmitting, by a processing system comprising a processor, a pattern to a programmable platform for presentation of the pattern, wherein the programmable platform comprises an electronic paper display, wherein a first portion of the pattern comprises a mouse action area detectable by a mouse when the mouse is placed over the mouse action area, wherein a second portion of the pattern comprises a macro executable by a program when the mouse is placed over the second portion of the pattern, wherein the transmitting of the pattern is based on a change in a status of the program, wherein the programmable platform continues to present the pattern on the electronic paper display during a time period that the processing system is not providing power to the programmable platform;

detecting, by the processing system, a selection of the macro at the programmable platform by receiving an indication from the mouse of a mouse button operation indicating the mouse is positioned over the second portion of the pattern during the mouse button operation;

providing, by the processing system, to the program, an indication of the selection of the macro to enable execution of the macro by the program; and

receiving, by the processing system, data from the mouse while the mouse is positioned over the mouse action area.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pattern is transmitted via a wireless communication between the processing system and the programmable platform.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising instructing the program to perform an action according to the data provided by the mouse while the mouse is positioned over the mouse action area.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the data comprises information associated with a portion of the mouse action area over which the mouse is positioned.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the processing system, system information to be provisioned to the programmable platform as platform presentation information; and

providing, by the processing system, the platform presentation information to the programmable platform to enable presentation of the platform presentation information on the electronic paper display.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining statistics from the program to be displayed by the programmable platform.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing power to the programmable platform during the transmitting of the pattern to the programmable platform.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising removing power supplied to the programmable platform after the pattern is presented by the programmable platform.

9. A programmable platform, comprising:

a processing system including a processor;

an electronic paper display associated with the processor; and

a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processing system, facilitate performance of operations, comprising:

receiving, from a processing system comprising a processor, pattern information representative of a pattern associated with a program, wherein the receiving of the pattern is based on one of a change in a status of the program or user input;

presenting the pattern on the electronic paper display, wherein a first portion of the pattern comprises a mouse action area detectable by a mouse when the mouse is placed over the mouse action area, wherein a second portion of the pattern comprises a macro executable by the program when the mouse is placed over the second portion of the pattern, wherein the presenting the pattern on the electronic paper display is at least during a time period that the processing system is not providing power to the programmable platform;

wherein the processing system detects a selection of the macro at the programmable platform by receiving an indication from the mouse of a mouse button operation indicating the mouse is positioned over the second portion of the pattern during the mouse button operation, and

wherein the processing system receives data from the mouse while the mouse is positioned over the mouse action area.

10. The programmable platform of claim 9 , wherein the pattern is received wirelessly from the processing system.

11. The programmable platform of claim 9 , wherein a supply of power is not removed from the electronic paper display until the presenting of the pattern on the electronic paper display.

12. The programmable platform of claim 11 , wherein the operations further comprise ceasing the supply of the power to the electronic paper display after the electronic paper display has presented the pattern.

13. The programmable platform of claim 9 , wherein the indication of the selection of the macro causes the program to initiate an action associated with the macro.

14. The programmable platform of claim 9 , wherein the operations further comprise presenting statistics provided by the program on the electronic paper display.

15. A machine-readable storage device, comprising instructions, wherein responsive to executing the instructions, a processing system including a processor performs operations comprising:

determining a macro executable by a program;

transmitting pattern information to a programmable platform for presentation of a pattern, wherein the programmable platform comprises an electronic paper display, wherein a first portion of the pattern comprises a mouse action area detectable by a mouse when the mouse is placed over the mouse action area, wherein a second portion of the pattern comprises the macro executable by the program when the mouse is placed over the second portion of the pattern, wherein the transmitting of the pattern information is based on one of a change in a status of the program or user input, wherein the programmable platform continues to present the pattern on the electronic paper display during a time period that the processing system is not providing power to the programmable platform;

detecting a selection of the macro at the programmable platform by receiving an indication from the mouse of a mouse button operation indicating the mouse is positioned over the second portion of the pattern during the mouse button operation;

providing, to the program, an indication of the selection of the macro to enable execution of the macro by the program; and

receiving data from the mouse while the mouse is positioned over the mouse action area.

16. The machine-readable storage device of claim 15 , wherein the pattern is sent wirelessly to the programmable platform.

17. The machine-readable storage device of claim 15 , wherein operations further comprise:

providing the power to the programmable platform before the presentation of the pattern by the programmable platform; and

ceasing the providing of the power to the programmable platform after completion of the presentation of the pattern by the programmable platform.

18. The machine-readable storage device of claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise generating updated system information according to a profile preference.

19. The machine-readable storage device of claim 18 , wherein the operations further comprise instructing the program to activate the macro upon receiving the indication of the selection of the macro from the programmable platform.

20. The machine-readable storage device of claim 18 , wherein the operations further comprise:

generating an updated pattern according to the updated system information; and

providing the updated pattern to the programmable platform for presentation of the updated pattern.
