Abstract

Some embodiments of an electrical stimulation system employ wireless electrode assemblies to provide pacing therapy, defibrillation therapy, or other stimulation therapy. In certain embodiments, the wireless electrode assemblies may include a guide wire channel so that each electrode assembly can be advanced over a guide wire instrument through the endocardium. For example, a distal tip portion of a guide wire instrument can penetrate through the endocardium and into the myocardial wall of a heart chamber, and the electrode assembly may then be advanced over the guide wire and into the heart chamber wall. In such circumstances, the guide wire instrument (and other portions of the delivery system) can be retracted from the heart chamber wall, thereby leaving the electrode assembly embedded in the heart tissue.

Claims (30)

1. A method of implanting a leadless cardiac pacing device in a patient, the method comprising:

inserting a distal end of a guide wire into a vessel of a cardiovascular system of the patient;

advancing a leadless cardiac pacing device along the guide wire through the vessel to a cardiovascular implantation site in the cardiovascular system, the leadless cardiac pacing device including a battery and a plurality of electrodes for providing electrical stimulation to cardiac tissue; and

thereafter, withdrawing the guide wire from the cardiovascular system.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising,

inserting a guide sheath in the vessel; and

wherein the step of advancing the leadless cardiac pacing device along the guide wire includes advancing the leadless cardiac pacing device through the guide sheath.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the guide sheath includes a steering mechanism to deflect a distal end of the guide sheath.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of advancing the leadless cardiac pacing device along the guide wire includes advancing a delivery catheter through the guide sheath with the leadless cardiac pacing device detachably coupled to the delivery catheter.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising,

advancing the leadless cardiac pacing device out of a distal opening of the guide sheath at the cardiovascular implantation site.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising,

engaging the leadless cardiac pacing device with a heart chamber wall at the cardiovascular implantation site.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of advancing the leadless cardiac pacing device along the guide wire includes advancing a delivery catheter through the vessel of the cardiovascular system with the leadless cardiac pacing device detachably coupled to the delivery catheter.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

decoupling the leadless cardiac pacing device from the delivery catheter, and

thereafter, withdrawing the delivery catheter from the cardiovascular system.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the delivery catheter includes a steering mechanism to deflect a distal end of the delivery catheter.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cardiovascular implantation site is in a heart of the cardiovascular system.

11. A method of implanting a leadless cardiac pacing device in a patient, the method comprising:

positioning a guide sheath into a vessel of a cardiovascular system of the patient;

positioning a guide wire through a lumen of the guide sheath with a distal end of the guide wire extending distally beyond a distal end of the guide sheath;

advancing a leadless cardiac pacing device along the guide wire within the lumen of the guide sheath to deploy the leadless cardiac pacing device at a cardiovascular implantation site in the cardiovascular system distal of the distal end of the guide sheath, the leadless cardiac pacing device including a battery and a plurality of electrodes for providing electrical stimulation to cardiac tissue; and

thereafter, withdrawing the guide wire and the guide sheath from the cardiovascular system.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the guide sheath includes a steering mechanism to deflect the distal end of the guide sheath.

13. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of advancing the leadless cardiac pacing device along the guide wire includes advancing a delivery catheter through the guide sheath with the leadless cardiac pacing device detachably coupled to the delivery catheter.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the cardiovascular implantation site is in a heart of the cardiovascular system.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising,

engaging the leadless cardiac pacing device with a heart chamber wall at the cardiovascular implantation site.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the delivery catheter includes a steering mechanism to deflect a distal end of the steering catheter.
