Abstract

A backlight assembly includes a substantially planar light guide defining an upper, lower, and first side surface. A first plurality of LEDs is positioned to emit light into the lower surface. A NVIS filter is placed adjacent to, and a second plurality of LEDs is positioned near to, the first side surface. A directing element extends between the second plurality of LEDs and the NVIS filter and directs the emitted light from the second plurality of LEDs through the NVIS filter and into the light guide. The NVIS filter extends substantially perpendicular from a support structure associated with the light guide.

Claims (68)

1. A backlight assembly comprising:

a substantially planar light guide defining an upper surface, a lower surface, and a first side surface;

a first plurality of lighting elements positioned below the lower surface of the light guide and oriented to direct light emitted from the first plurality of lighting elements into the lower surface;

a NVIS filter placed adjacent to the first side surface;

a second plurality of lighting elements positioned adjacent to the first side surface;

a directing element extending between the second plurality of lighting elements and the NVIS filter to direct light emitted from the second plurality of lighting elements through the NVIS filter and into the light guide; and

a support structure in association with said light guide, wherein said NVIS filter extends substantially perpendicular from said support structure.

2. The backlight assembly of claim 1 wherein:

said directing element comprises a curved, reflective surface.

3. The backlight assembly of claim 1 wherein:

the first plurality of lighting elements comprise light emitting diodes; and

the second plurality of lighting elements comprise light emitting diodes.

4. The backlight assembly of claim 1 where:

said light guide comprises elements configured to cause light traveling through said light guide to be redirected in various directions.

5. The backlight assembly of claim 1 further comprising:

a separating element configured to absorb light.

6. The backlight assembly of claim 1 wherein:

said NVIS filter extends to a lower surface of said directing element.

7. The backlight assembly of claim 1 wherein:

said directing element is configured to accommodate an electronic display layer such that said electronic display layer is located above said light guide.

8. The backlight assembly of claim 7 wherein:

the electronic display layer comprises liquid crystals.

9. The backlight assembly of claim 1 further comprising:

a separating element configured to reflect light.

10. The backlight assembly of claim 9 wherein:

said NVIS filter extends through said separating element.

11. The backlight assembly of claim 1 further comprising:

a second NVIS filter placed adjacent to a second side surface of the substantially planar light guide, wherein said second side surface is positioned opposite the first side surface;

a third plurality of lighting elements positioned adjacent to the second side surface; and

a second directing element extending between the third plurality of lighting elements and the second NVIS filter to direct light emitted from the third plurality of lighting elements through the second NVIS filter and into the light guide.

12. The backlight assembly of claim 11 wherein:

said second directing element comprises a curved, reflective surface.

13. The backlight assembly of claim 11 wherein:

said first plurality of lighting elements, said second plurality of lighting elements, and said third plurality of lighting elements are mounted to said support structure.

14. The backlight assembly of claim 13 wherein:

said first plurality of lighting elements, said second plurality of lighting elements, and said third plurality of lighting elements are mounted to said support structure in a co-planar fashion.

15. An electronic display assembly comprising:

a liquid crystal layer;

a substantially cuboid light guide in association with said liquid crystal layer;

a first plurality of LEDs positioned to direct light emitted from the first plurality of LEDs into a lower surface of said light guide;

a NVIS filter placed adjacent to a side surface of said light guide;

a second plurality of LEDs positioned adjacent to the side surface;

a separating element extending between the first plurality of LEDs and the second plurality of LEDs;

a directing element extending between the second plurality of LEDs and the NVIS filter, wherein said directing element is configured to direct light emitted from the second plurality of LEDs through the NVIS filter and into the light guide;

wherein said light guide is configured to direct light emitted therein to the liquid crystal layer.

16. The electronic display assembly of claim 15 wherein:

said directing element is configured to accommodate said liquid crystal layer in an elevated position above said light guide.

17. The electronic display assembly of claim 15 further comprising:

a second NVIS filter placed adjacent to a second side surface;

a third plurality of LEDs positioned adjacent to the second side surface;

a second separating element extending between the third plurality of LEDs and the first plurality of LEDs; and

a second directing element extending between the third plurality of LEDs and the second NVIS filter to direct light emitted from the third plurality of LEDs through the second NVIS filter and into the light guide.

18. The electronic display assembly of claim 17 wherein:

said directing element comprises a curved, reflective surface; and

said second directing element comprises a curved, reflective surface.

19. The electronic display assembly of claim 18 wherein:

said first plurality of LEDs, said second plurality of LEDs, and said third plurality of LEDs are mounted to a supporting structure in a co-planar fashion.

20. A backlight assembly comprising:

a substantially cuboid light guide defining an upper surface, a lower surface, a first side surface, and a second side surface;

a first plurality of LEDs positioned below the lower surface of the light guide and oriented to direct light emitted from the first plurality of LEDs into the lower surface;

a first NVIS filter placed adjacent to the first side surface;

a second plurality of LEDs positioned adjacent to the first NVIS filter;

a separating element extending between the first plurality of LEDs and the second plurality of LEDs;

a directing element comprising a curved, reflective surface extending between the second plurality of LEDs and the first NVIS filter to direct light emitted from the second plurality of LEDs through the first NVIS filter and into the first side surface of the light guide;
