Abstract

A door assembly includes a first door skin and a second door skin spaced apart from the first door skin. The assembly also includes an energy sensor generating an energy signature signal and a memory storing a door component operating signature. A controller is coupled to the accelerometer and forms a comparison of the energy signature signal to the door component operating signature and generates a door component operation status signal in response to the comparison.

Claims (46)

1. A method for monitoring a plurality of door assemblies at a facility, wherein each door assembly of the plurality of door assemblies in the facility comprises a door, a door frame, a hinge connecting the door to the door frame, an energy sensor, a memory and a door controller, the method comprising:

generating a plurality of energy signature signals with the energy sensor of each door assembly,

comparing each energy signature signal of the plurality of energy signature sensors to a door component operating signature stored in the memory of each corresponding door assembly,

generating a plurality of door component operation status signals in response to the comparing,

communicating the plurality of door component operation status signals to a central controller or a manufacturer controller; and

generating a report with the central controller or the manufacturer controller,

wherein the energy sensor is located on the door frame or the hinge of each corresponding door assembly,

the door component operation status signal corresponds to a door-to-frame clearance and a door-to-ground clearance, and

the energy sensor comprises an accelerometer.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the door controller is in communication with a clock.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising,

recording a time of an enter or an exit through each door.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein each door assembly comprises an access controller.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the access controller comprises at least one component selected from the group consisting of: a card reader, a fingerprint detector, a retina detector and a keypad.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the clock provides a date and time of an event.

7. The method of claim 2 , wherein the clock measures the length of an energy signature signal.

8. The method of claim 2 , wherein the clock provides a length of time since a last event.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the energy sensor comprises a multi-axis accelerometer.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the energy sensor is located on the door frame of each corresponding door assembly.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the energy sensor and memory are disposed with each corresponding door assembly, and the controller is disposed in another location from the sensor and the memory.

12. A door assembly comprising:

a door;

a door frame;

a hinge connecting the door to the door frame;

an energy sensor generating an energy signature signal;

a memory storing a door component operating signature;

a door controller coupled to the energy sensor,

wherein the door controller forms a comparison of the energy signature signal to the door component operating signature and generates a door component operation status signal in response to the comparison,

the energy sensor comprises an accelerometer,

the energy sensor is located on the door frame or the hinge, and

the door component operation status signal corresponds to a door-to-frame clearance and a door-to-ground clearance.

13. The door assembly of claim 12 , wherein the door controller is in communication with a clock.

14. The door assembly of claim 12 , wherein the energy sensor comprises a multi-axis accelerometer.

15. The door assembly of claim 12 , wherein the energy sensor is located on the door frame of each corresponding door assembly.

16. The door assembly of claim 12 , wherein the energy sensor and memory are disposed with the door assembly, and the controller is disposed in another location from the sensor and the memory.

17. A method of monitoring a plurality of door assemblies, wherein each door assembly of the plurality of door assemblies comprises a door, a door frame, and a hinge, the method comprising:

attaching an energy sensor to the door frame or the hinge of each corresponding door assembly,

generating an energy signature signal with the energy sensor,

comparing the energy signature signal to a door component operating signature, and

generating a door component operation status signal in response to the comparison,

wherein the door controller compares the energy signature signal to a door component operating signature stored in a memory,

the energy sensor comprises an accelerometer, and

the door component operation status signal corresponds a door-to-frame clearance and a door-to ground clearance.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising communicating the door operation status signal to a central controller.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein each door assembly comprises an access controller.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein the energy sensor and memory are disposed with the door assembly, and the controller is disposed in another location from the sensor and the memory.
