Abstract

A ball striking device, such as a golf club, includes a head with a face having a ball-striking surface configured for striking a ball, a body connected to the face, and at least one channel in the ball-striking surface of the face. The region of highest COR response of the face is directionally enlarged toward the channel. Depending on the size, shape, and location of the channel, the face can be altered to provide greater COR response and increased energy transfer for impacts at specific locations on the face.

Claims (50)

1. A hollow body golf club head comprising:

a face having a ball-striking surface for striking a ball and an inner surface opposite the ball-striking surface, wherein the face is defined by a peripheral edge;

a body connected to the face and extending rearward from the peripheral edge of the face, the body having a top surface, a sole surface, a heel, a toe, and a rear;

the peripheral edge of the face comprises a toe edge, a heel edge, a bottom edge, and a top edge;

a first channel formed in the face and located inwardly from the peripheral edge of the face;

a second channel formed in the face and located inwardly from the peripheral edge of the face;

wherein:

a hollow interior cavity is bounded by the face, the top surface, the sole surface, the heel, the toe, and the rear;

the first channel extends parallel to the toe edge within a high-toe area of the face;

the second channel extends parallel to the heel edge within a low-heel area of the face;

the first channel is formed as a recess that extends partially through a thickness of the face, and wherein the second channel is formed as a recess that extends partially through a thickness of the face;

the first channel and the second channel are located on the inner surface of the face;

no portion of the first channel or the second channel extends to within a distance of approximately 1.5 inches from a geometric center of the face; and

a region of highest response of the face is larger in a direction toward both the high-toe area and the low-heel area compared to an identically constructed club that does not contain the first channel and the second channel.

2. The hollow body golf club head of claim 1 , further comprising:

a third channel formed in the face and located inwardly from the peripheral edge of the face; and

a fourth channel formed in the face and located inwardly from the peripheral edge of the face;

wherein the first and third channel are located in a first quadrant of the face, and the second channel and the fourth channel are located in a second quadrant of the face that is different from the first quadrant;

wherein the region of highest response is enlarged in a direction generally towards a first midpoint located between the first channel and the third channel, and a second midpoint located between the second channel and the fourth channel.

3. The hollow body golf club head of claim 1 , wherein both the first channel and the second channel are at least partially filled with a flexible material, and wherein the flexible material comprises a flexibility greater than a flexibility of a face material.

4. A hollow body golf club head comprising:

a face having a ball-striking surface for striking a ball and an inner surface opposite the ball-striking surface, wherein the face is defined by a peripheral edge;

a body connected to the face and extending rearward from the peripheral edge of the face, the body having a top surface, a sole surface, a heel, a toe, and a rear;

a first channel formed in the face and located inwardly from the peripheral edge of the face;

a second channel formed in the face and located inwardly from the peripheral edge of the face;

wherein:

a hollow interior cavity is bounded by the face, the top surface, the sole surface, the heel, the toe, and the rear;

the first channel and the second channel extend parallel with the peripheral edge of the face;

the peripheral edge of the face further comprises a top edge, a bottom edge, a heel edge, and a toe edge; and

the first channel is located on a high-toe area of the face, such that the first channel extends parallel with the toe edge, and the second channel is located on a low-heel area of the face, such that the second channel extends parallel with the heel edge;

the first channel is formed as a recess that extends partially through a thickness of the face, and wherein the second channel is formed as a recess that extends partially through a thickness of the face;

no portion of the first channel or the second channel extends to within a distance of approximately 1.5 inches from a geometric center of the face; and

a region of highest response of the face is larger in a direction toward both the high-toe area and the low-heel area compared to an identically constructed club that does not contain the first channel and the second channel.

5. The hollow body golf club head of claim 4 , further comprising:

a third channel formed in the face and located inwardly from the peripheral edge of the face; and

a fourth channel formed in the face and located inwardly from the peripheral edge of the face;

wherein the first and third channel are located in the high-toe area of the face and the second channel and the fourth channel are located in an area of the face;

wherein the region of highest response is enlarged in a direction generally towards a first midpoint located between the first channel and the third channel, and a second midpoint located between the second channel and the fourth channel.

6. The hollow body golf club head of claim 5 , wherein the third channel extends parallel with the top edge of the face, and the fourth channel extends parallel with the bottom edge of the face.

7. The hollow body golf club head of claim 4 , wherein both the first channel and the second channel are at least partially filled with a flexible material, and wherein the flexible material comprises a flexibility greater than a flexibility of a face material.

8. The hollow body golf club head of claim 2 , wherein:

the third channel is an uppermost channel, located near the top edge of the face;

the fourth channel is a lowermost channel, located near the bottom edge of the face; and

the third channel and fourth channels are both curvilinear.

9. The hollow body golf club head of claim 2 , wherein the third channel extends parallel with the top edge of the face, and the fourth channel extends parallel with the bottom edge of the face.

10. The hollow body golf club head of claim 2 , wherein the second channel and the fourth channel are arranged at an oblique angle, with respect to one another, of greater than 90 degrees.

11. The hollow body golf club head of claim 5 , wherein:

the third channel is an uppermost channel, located near the top edge of the face;

the fourth channel is a lowermost channel, located near the bottom edge of the face; and

the third channel and fourth channels are both curvilinear.
