Abstract

Disclosed herein are “ketannabis” (or “ketonnabis”) compositions including a combination of: (1) tetrahydrocannabinol (THC); (2) a ketone body component such as beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and/or acetoacetate; and (3) a dietetically or pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. Also disclosed herein are methods of using such ketannabis compositions for producing desired physiological effects. The ketannabis compositions beneficially enhance the euphoric effects of THC without aggravating common side effects or even acting to reduce common side effects such as anxiety, disruption of short-term memory, appetite increases, heart rate increases, and blood pressure changes.

17 . A method for administering ketone bodies and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to a mammal, comprising:

administering a ketone body component selected from beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) salts, BHB esters, BHB acid, acetoacetate salts, acetoacetate esters, acetoacetic acid, and combinations thereof;

administering a THC component and

the ketone body component raising blood ketone level in the mammal.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the method comprises administering a daily dose of about 0.5 grams to about 50 grams of the ketone body component and a daily dose of about 1 mg to about 500 mg of the THC component.

20 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the composition promotes euphoric effects in the mammal to a greater degree than a composition containing the same amount of THC but without a ketone body component.

The method of claim 20 , wherein the composition promotes euphoric effects in the mammal while maintaining or reducing negative side effects as compared to a composition containing the same amount of THC but without a ketone body component, wherein the negative side effects include one or more of increased appetite, disruption of short-term memory, anxiety, increased heart rate, and altered blood pressure.

24 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the composition induces sustained ketosis in the mammal with reduced symptoms of at least one of hypoglycemia, keto flu, or depression relative to a ketone body composition omitting THC.

26 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the ketone body component increases the pharmacokinetic utilization of the THC component relative to pharmacokinetic utilization of the THC component in the absence of the ketone body component.

27 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the method additionally promotes one or more of neuroprotection, an anti-depressant effect, an anti-inflammation effect, an analgesic effect, an antioxidant effect, an anti-tumorigenic effect, and a longevity promoting effect.

28 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the ketone body component enhances effectiveness of the composition at least in part as a result of molecular signaling.

29 . The method of claim 17 , the method modulating function of the endocannabinoid system in a mammal.

30 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the ketone body component and the THC component are administered in combination and/or simultaneously by one or more of ingestion, intragastric injection, oral mucosal administration, rectal administration, vaginal administration, or parenteral administration.

31 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the THC component is administered by one or more of ingestion, intragastric injection, topical administration, inhalation, oral mucosal administration, rectal administration, vaginal administration, or parenteral administration.

32 . The method of claim 31 , wherein the ketone body component is administered separately from the THC component.

33 . The method of claim 32 , wherein the ketone body component is administered by one or more of ingestion, intragastric injection, oral mucosal administration, rectal administration, vaginal administration, or parenteral administration.

34 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the THC component is administered by one or more of ingestion or inhalation.

35 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the ketone body component and the THC component are administered simultaneously.

36 . The method of claim 35 , wherein the administering the ketone body component and administering the THC component simultaneously provides euphoric effects while raising blood ketone levels.

37 . The method of claim 35 , wherein the ketone body component and the THC component are administered in the same dosage form.

38 . The method of claim 37 , wherein the dosage form is a solid or powder.

39 . The method of claim 37 , wherein the dosage form is a liquid.

40 . The method of claim 37 , wherein the dosage form includes a pharmaceutically or dietetically acceptable carrier designed to provide biologically available amounts of both the ketone body component and the THC component.

41 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the THC component includes one or more additional cannabinoid compounds derived from the cannabis plant, in addition to THC.

42 . The method of claim 17 , wherein administering the ketone body component and administering the THC component provides a ratio of biologically available ketone bodies to biologically available THC of at least 10:1.

43 . The method of claim 17 , wherein administering the ketone body component provides more than 2 grams of available ketone bodies to the mammal.

44 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the ketone body component is selected from beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) salts, BHB esters, acetoacetate salts, acetoacetate esters, and combinations thereof.

45 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the THC component includes a THC compound having a BHB or acetoacetate group attached to the THC compound via an ester bond.

46 . A method for promoting euphoric effects in a mammal, the method comprising:

administering a ketone body component selected from beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) salts, BHB esters, BHB acid, acetoacetate salts, acetoacetate esters, acetoacetic acid, and combinations thereof;

administering a THC component; and

the administering of the ketone body component and the THC component provides one or both of

promoting euphoric effects in the mammal to a greater degree than a composition containing the same amount of THC but without a ketone body component, or

promoting euphoric effects in the mammal while maintaining or reducing negative side effects as compared to a composition containing the same amount of THC but without a ketone body component.

47 . The method of claim 46 , wherein the negative side effects include one or more of increased appetite, disruption of short-term memory, anxiety, increased heart rate, and altered blood pressure.

48 . The method of claim 46 , comprising administering a daily dose of about 0.5 grams to about 50 grams of the ketone body component and a daily dose of about 1 mg to about 500 mg of the THC component.

49 . A method for promoting ketosis in a mammal, the method comprising:

administering a ketone body component selected from beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) salts, BHB esters, BHB acid, acetoacetate salts, acetoacetate esters, acetoacetic acid, and combinations thereof;

administering a THC component; and

the administering of the ketone body component and the THC component induces sustained ketosis in the mammal with reduced symptoms of at least one of hypoglycemia, keto flu, or depression relative to a ketone body composition omitting THC.

50 . The method of claim 49 , comprising administering a daily dose of about 0.5 grams to about 50 grams of the ketone body component and a daily dose of about 1 mg to about 500 mg of the THC component.
