Abstract

A tool to remove portions of casing from a wellbore. A tool may include a bottom sub-assembly and casing that selectively detach from a sub-assembly. This may allow for tools and casing within the wellbore to be efficiently and effectively removed from the wellbore without having to cut tools down well.

Claims (48)

1. A detachable tool for a wellbore comprising:

a housing configured to be coupled to a bottom sub assembly, the end of the housing including a first anti-rotational lock, the first anti-rotational lock includes a first set of fingers on the end and a first set of grooves, the first set of fingers and the first set of grooves being configured to extend in parallel to each other, wherein an inner diameter of the end is tapered towards a central axis of the housing;

an upper sub assembly with a second anti-rotational lock including a second set of fingers and a second set of grooves, the first set of fingers being configured to be inserted into the second set of grooves and the second set of fingers being configured to be inserted into the first set of grooves to restrict the rotational movement of upper-sub assembly and the housing in two directions, the upper sub assembly including a support sleeve and an adjuster sleeve, the adjuster sleeve extending across the second anti-rotational lock, the adjuster sleeve being configured to decouple the upper sub assembly from the bottom sub assembly utilizing downward linear movement of the support sleeve and inward movement of the adjuster sleeve.

2. The detachable tool of claim 1 ,

a first port positioned below a coupling location of the adjuster sleeve and the upper sub assembly, wherein a first end of the adjuster sleeve is positioned on a first side of the second set of fingers and a second end of the adjuster sleeve is positioned on a second side of the second set of fingers, wherein in a first mode movement of the adjuster relative to the bottom sub assembly is restricted and in a second mode the adjuster sleeve can linearly move relative to the bottom sub assembly.

3. The detachable tool of claim 2 , wherein a collet of the adjuster sleeve is positioned on the second end of the adjuster sleeve below the second set of fingers, wherein a diameter associated with the collet is configured to change.

4. The detachable tool of claim 1 , wherein the support sleeve is indirectly coupled to the upper sub-assembly through the adjuster sleeve, the support sleeve including first ports extending through the support sleeve, wherein the support sleeve is configured to decouple the upper sub-assembly from the bottom sub assembly responsive to linear movement of the support sleeve.

5. The detachable tool of claim 4 , wherein the support sleeve is configured to receive an object.

6. The detachable tool of claim 4 , wherein the support sleeve is retrieved as an integral part of the upper sub assembly.

7. The detachable tool of claim 4 , wherein an outer diameter of the support sleeve outside diameter is variable based in part on slots extending in a direction in parallel to a central axis of the support sleeve.

8. The detachable tool of claim 4 , wherein the support sleeve is coupled to the adjuster sleeve assembly via retaining pins after the support sleeve shears.

9. The detachable tool of claim 4 , wherein the bottom sub assembly includes a no-go that limits the movement of the support sleeve after the support sleeve has sheared.

10. The detachable tool of claim 1

wherein the adjuster sleeve includes a shaft and a collet, the adjuster sleeve being coupled to the upper sub assembly; and

the adjuster sleeve and the support sleeve being configured to be coupled together via a temporary coupling mechanism in a first mode, and the adjuster sleeve and the support sleeve are configured to be coupled together via the collet in a second mode, wherein the second mode a port extending through the adjuster sleeve is positioned between a proximal end of the adjuster sleeve and a proximal end of the support sleeve.

11. The detachable tool of claim 1 , further comprising:

production tubing; and

a seal assembly, wherein the production tubing and the seal assembly are inserted through the detachable tool utilizing the tapered inner diameter of the end of the housing after the bottom sub assembly is decoupled from the upper sub assembly.

12. A method for utilizing a detachable tool within a wellbore comprising:

coupling a housing to a bottom sub assembly, the end of the housing including a first anti-rotational lock, the first anti-rotational lock includes a first set of fingers on the end and a first set of grooves, the first set of fingers and the first set of grooves being configured to extend in parallel to each other, wherein an inner diameter of the end is tapered towards a central axis of the housing;

inserting the first set of fingers into a second set of grooves associated with an upper sub assembly;

inserting a second set of fingers associated with the upper sub assembly into the first set of grooves;

restricting rotational movement of upper-sub assembly and the housing in two directions;

decoupling the upper sub assembly from the bottom sub assembly based on downward linear movement of a support sleeve and inward movement of the adjuster sleeve, wherein an adjuster sleeve that is coupled to the upper sub assembly extends across the second anti-rotational lock.

13. The method of claim 12 ,

wherein the adjuster sleeve includes a first ports positioned below a coupling location of the adjuster sleeve and the upper sub assembly, wherein a first end of the adjuster sleeve is positioned on a first side of the second set of fingers and a second end of the adjuster sleeve is positioned on a second side of the second set of fingers, wherein in a first mode movement of the adjuster relative to the bottom sub assembly is restricted and in a second mode the adjuster sleeve can linearly move relative to the bottom sub assembly.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein a collet of the adjuster sleeve is positioned on the second end of the adjuster sleeve below the second set of fingers, and

changing a diameter associated with the collet.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

indirectly coupling the support sleeve to the upper sub-assembly through the adjuster sleeve, the support sleeve including first ports extending through the support sleeve, wherein the support sleeve is configured to decouple the upper sub-assembly from the bottom sub assembly responsive to linear movement of the support sleeve.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

positioning the object on the support sleeve.

17. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

retrieving the support sleeve as an integral part of the upper sub assembly.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein an outer diameter of the support sleeve is a variable length based in part on slots extending in a direction in parallel to a central axis of the support sleeve.

19. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

coupling the support sleeve to the adjuster sleeve assembly via retaining pins after the support sleeve shears.

20. The method of claim 15 , wherein the bottom sub assembly includes a no-go that limits the movement of the support sleeve after the support sleeve has sheared.

21. A method for utilizing a detachable tool for a wellbore comprising:

coupling a housing to a bottom sub assembly, the end of the housing including a first anti-rotational lock, the first anti-rotational lock include a first set of fingers on the end and a first set of grooves, the first set of fingers and the first set of grooves being configured to extend in parallel to each other, wherein an inner diameter of the end is tapered towards a central axis of the housing;

inserting the first set of fingers into a second set of grooves associated with an upper sub assembly;

inserting a second set of fingers associated with the upper sub assembly into the first set of grooves;

restricting rotational movement of upper-sub assembly and the housing in two directions;

coupling an adjuster sleeve and a support sleeve together via a temporary coupling mechanism in a first mode, wherein the adjuster sleeve includes a shaft and a collet;

coupling the adjuster sleeve to the upper sub assembly; and

coupling the adjuster sleeve and the support sleeve together via the collet in a second mode.

22. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

inserting production tubing and a seal assembly through the detachable tool utilizing the tapered inner diameter of the end of the housing after the bottom sub assembly is decoupled from the upper sub assembly.
