Abstract

A humidity transfer assembly includes a pressure vessel and a humidity transfer device disposed in the pressure vessel. The humidity transfer device includes an enclosure, a first inlet line fluidly coupled to the enclosure and configured to supply anode exhaust thereto, a first outlet line fluidly coupled to the enclosure and configured to output anode exhaust therefrom, and a second inlet line fluidly coupled to the enclosure and configured to supply feed gas thereto. The humidity transfer device is configured to transfer steam from anode exhaust to feed gas and to output feed gas into the pressure vessel.

Claims (58)

1. A humidity transfer assembly comprising:

a pressure vessel; and

a humidity transfer device disposed in the pressure vessel, the humidity transfer device comprising:

an enclosure;

a first inlet line fluidly coupled to the enclosure and configured to supply anode exhaust thereto;

a first outlet line fluidly coupled to the enclosure and configured to output the anode exhaust therefrom; and

a second inlet line fluidly coupled to the enclosure and configured to supply feed gas thereto;

wherein the humidity transfer device is configured to transfer steam from the anode exhaust to the feed gas to produce partially-humidified feed gas, and to output the partially-humidified feed gas into the pressure vessel, and

wherein the pressure vessel is configured to be pressurized with the partially-humidified feed gas.

2. The humidity transfer assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a feed gas outlet formed in the pressure vessel and configured to output humidified feed gas from the pressure vessel.

3. The humidity transfer assembly of claim 1 , wherein the humidity transfer device is a shell-and-tube configuration.

4. The humidity transfer assembly of claim 1 , wherein the humidity transfer device is a planar stack configuration.

5. The humidity transfer assembly of claim 1 , wherein a pressure in the pressure vessel is approximately the same as a pressure of the anode exhaust received in the enclosure.

6. The humidity transfer assembly of claim 5 , wherein the enclosure is formed from plastic.

7. The humidity transfer assembly of claim 1 , further comprising:

water disposed in the pressure vessel and defining a water level; and

a feed gas conduit extending from the enclosure and defining a conduit outlet disposed below the water level.

8. The humidity transfer assembly of claim 7 , wherein an introduction of the feed gas from the feed gas conduit into the water vaporizes a portion of the water.

9. The humidity transfer assembly of claim 7 , further comprising a water level controller configured to adjust a steam-to-carbon ratio for the feed gas in the pressure vessel by controlling the water level in the pressure vessel.

10. The humidity transfer assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a polymer-electrolyte membrane disposed in the enclosure and separating the anode exhaust from the feed gas.

11. The humidity transfer assembly of claim 10 ,

wherein the polymer-electrolyte membrane is formed from a hydrocarbon.

12. A fuel cell system comprising:

a pressure vessel;

an electrochemical hydrogen separator having an anode and a cathode; and

a humidity transfer device disposed in the pressure vessel,

the humidity transfer device comprising:

an enclosure,

a first inlet line fluidly coupled to the enclosure and configured to supply anode exhaust from the anode to the enclosure,

a first outlet line fluidly coupled to the enclosure and configured to output the anode exhaust therefrom, and

a second inlet line fluidly coupled to the enclosure and configured to supply cathode exhaust from the cathode to the enclosure;

wherein the humidity transfer device is configured to transfer steam from the anode exhaust to the cathode exhaust to produce partially-humidified cathode exhaust, and to output the partially-humidified cathode exhaust into the pressure vessel; and

wherein the pressure vessel is configured to be pressurized with the partially-humidified cathode exhaust.

13. The fuel cell system of claim 12 , further comprising a polymer-electrolyte membrane disposed in the humidity transfer device, the polymer-electrolyte membrane separating the cathode exhaust from the anode exhaust and passing steam therebetween.

16. The fuel cell system of claim 15 , wherein:

the cathode of the electrochemical hydrogen compressor is configured to output hydrogen; and

wherein at least a portion of the hydrogen is mixed with the cathode exhaust output from the cathode of the electrochemical hydrogen separator.

17. The fuel cell system of claim 16 , wherein the hydrogen is mixed with the cathode exhaust upstream from the humidity transfer device.

18. A fuel cell system comprising:

a pressure vessel;

a fuel cell having an anode and a cathode;

an electrochemical hydrogen separator having an anode and a cathode; and

a humidity transfer device disposed in the pressure vessel,

the humidity transfer device comprising:

an enclosure,
