Abstract

A networked air quality monitoring system. Such a system could provide information beyond the user's local instrument on air quality over a much larger area. This information could be used by a user to make decisions about frequenting particular areas based on the results, or to alert them to changing conditions in the area so that the user might act before local conditions change.

Claims (11)

1. A method for operating an air quality monitoring system comprising:

collecting air quality data from a plurality of air quality monitoring instruments, wherein the plurality of air quality monitoring instrument includes one or more wireless mobile devices configured to transmit particle count data from an optical particle counter using a public communication network, at least one of the air quality monitoring instruments comprises a robotic optical particle counter having a controller programmed to receive operating instructions from a remotely positioned control system and calibrated to measure a number of airborne particles passing through a beam of light;

periodically transmitting an air quality data record from each of the plurality of air quality monitoring instruments, each data record including a date, time stamp, particle count data, instrument identification and geographic coordinates of each air quality monitoring instrument transmitting the data record wherein the at least one robotic optical particle counter transmits data records with an instrument identification that identifies the robotic optical particle counter as a robotic device, using the public communication network;

receiving the air quality data records from each of the plurality of air quality monitoring instruments that are aggregated to create an aggregate data set of air quality over a geographic area, and

automatically generating a revised air quality map using the geographic coordinates of the time stamped data records from each of the plurality of air quality monitoring instrument.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein transmitting the air quality data record further comprising transmitting a measured temperature value.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of collecting air quality data further comprises measuring air quality with a photometer.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein one or more of the air quality monitoring instruments comprises a fixed position sensor connected to the server with a network.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein transmitting a data record with a public communication network comprises communicating the data record using a cellular network.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising sensing particle count data with a personal air quality sensor wherein a light beam is transmitted through a particle flow path through a battery powered device including a photodetector connected to an amplifier.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising collecting air quality data from a plurality of different types of air quality instruments having different particle sensors, the data record transmitting the type of air quality instrument.
