Abstract

A modular surgical system for use in a surgical procedure is disclosed. The modular surgical system includes a control module including a power supply and surgical modules including a first surgical module and a second surgical module. The first surgical module is arranged in a stack configuration with the control module and the second surgical module. The power supply is configured to output power to the first surgical module and the second surgical module. A power backplane is configured to deliver the power to the first surgical module and the second surgical module through the first surgical module. A control circuit is configured to adaptively adjust power allocations to the first surgical module and the second surgical module.

Claims (35)

1. A modular surgical system for use in a surgical procedure, the modular surgical system comprising:

a control module comprising a power supply and a first backplane connector;

surgical modules, comprising:

a first surgical module comprising a second backplane connector and a third backplane connector; and

a second surgical module comprising a fourth backplane connector, wherein the first surgical module is arranged in a stack configuration with the control module and the second surgical module, and wherein, in the stack configuration, the first backplane connector engages the second backplane connector and the third backplane connector engages the fourth backplane connector to define a power backplane from the control module through the first surgical module to the second surgical module, wherein the power supply is configured to deliver power to the first surgical module and the second surgical module through the first surgical module via the power backplane; and

a control circuit configured to:

determine a power budget for the modular surgical system;

adaptively adjust power allocations to the first surgical module and the second surgical module based on at least one energy characteristic of at least one of the first surgical module or the second surgical module and the determined power budget; and

apply a restricted power level setting to one of the surgical modules in response to a detected increase in power needed by another one of the surgical modules, wherein the restricted power level setting prevents simultaneous activation of the first surgical module and the second surgical module.

2. The modular surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is configured to adaptively adjust the power allocations to the first surgical module and the second surgical module based on a surgical procedure type.

3. The modular surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is configured to adaptively adjust the power allocations to the first surgical module and the second surgical module based on a number of the surgical modules in the stack configuration.

4. The modular surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is configured to adaptively adjust the power allocations to the first surgical module and the second surgical module based on surgical instruments connected to the surgical modules.

5. The modular surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is configured to adaptively adjust the power allocations to the first surgical module and the second surgical module based on user-selected energy modalities for surgical instruments connected to the surgical modules.

6. The modular surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is further configured to:

monitor the power allocations to the surgical modules.

7. The modular surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the first surgical module is coupled to a surgical instrument configured to deliver therapeutic energy to tissue, and wherein the increase in power is due to an activation of the surgical instrument.

8. The modular surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the restricted power level setting deactivates the second surgical module.

9. The modular surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the control module is a header module.

10. A modular surgical system, comprising:

a control module comprising a power supply and a first backplane connector;

a first surgical module comprising a second backplane connector and a third backplane connector;

a second surgical module comprising a fourth backplane connector, wherein the control module, the first surgical module, and the second surgical module are arrangeable in a stack configuration, and wherein, in the stack configuration, the first backplane connector engages the second backplane connector and the third backplane connector engages the fourth backplane connector to define a power backplane that extends from the control module to the second surgical module through the first surgical module, and wherein the power supply is configured to output power to the first surgical module and the second surgical module via the power backplane; and

a control circuit configured to:

determine a power budget for the modular surgical system;

adaptively adjust power allocations to the first surgical module and the second surgical module based on at least one energy characteristic of at least one of the first surgical module or the second surgical module and the determined power budget; and

apply a restricted power level setting to one of the first surgical module and the second surgical module in response to a detected increase in power needed by another one of the first surgical module and the second surgical module, wherein the restricted power level setting prevents simultaneous activation of the first surgical module and the second surgical module.

11. The modular surgical system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuit is configured to adaptively adjust the power allocations to the first surgical module and the second surgical module based on a surgical procedure type.

12. The modular surgical system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuit is configured to adaptively adjust the power allocations to the first surgical module and the second surgical module based on a number of surgical modules in the stack configuration.

13. The modular surgical system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuit is configured to adaptively adjust the power allocations to the first surgical module and the second surgical module based on surgical instruments connected to the first surgical module and the second surgical module.

The modular surgical system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuit is configured to adaptively adjust the power allocations to the first surgical module and the second surgical module based on user-selected energy modalities for surgical instruments connected to the first surgical module and the second surgical module.

15. The modular surgical system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuit is further configured to:

monitor the power allocations to the first surgical module and the second surgical module.

16. The modular surgical system of claim 10 , wherein the first surgical module is coupled to a surgical instrument configured to deliver therapeutic energy to tissue, and wherein the increase in power is due to an activation of the surgical instrument.

17. The modular surgical system of claim 10 , wherein the restricted power level setting deactivates the second surgical module.

18. The modular surgical system of claim 10 , wherein the control module comprises a header module.
