Abstract

Multi-piece golf balls having a multi-layered solid core and multi-layered cover are provided.

Claims (15)

1. A golf ball comprising:

an inner core layer having a center hardness (H center ) of 45 Shore C or greater, and an outer surface hardness (H center surface ) of from 55 Shore C to 90 Shore C;

an intermediate core layer formed from a thermoplastic composition having a material hardness (H intermediate core material ) of 98 Shore C or less;

an outer core layer formed from a composition selected from the group consisting of ionomeric and non-ionomeric E/X- and E/X/Y-type acid copolymers of ethylene (E), a C 3 -C 8 α, β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid (X), and an optional softening monomer (Y), and blends of two or more thereof, and having a material hardness (H outer core material ) of 35 Shore D or greater;

an inner cover layer formed from a thermoplastic composition having a material hardness (H inner cover material ) of 95 Shore C or less;

an intermediate cover layer formed from a thermoplastic composition having a material hardness (H intermediate cover material ) of from 80 Shore C to 99 Shore C; and

an outer cover layer formed from a composition selected from the group consisting of ionomeric and non-ionomeric E/X- and E/X/Y-type acid copolymers of ethylene (E), a C 3 -C 8 α, β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid (X), and an optional softening monomer (Y); and blends of two or more thereof;

wherein the outer cover layer has a surface hardness of from 58 Shore D to 75 Shore D;

wherein the inner core layer is formed from a thermoplastic composition.

2. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the inner core layer has a diameter of from 0.100 inches to 1.30 inches.

3. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein H intermediate cover material is greater than the H outer core material .

4. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the outer core layer composition is a partially or fully neutralized ionomer composition wherein at least 80% of all acid groups present are neutralized.

5. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the outer core layer composition is a partially or fully neutralized ionomer composition wherein at least 90% of all acid groups present are neutralized.

6. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the outer core layer composition is a fully neutralized ionomer composition wherein 100% of all acid groups present are neutralized.

7. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the outer cover layer composition is a partially or fully neutralized ionomer composition wherein at least 80% of all acid groups present are neutralized.
