Abstract

Provided is a device, comprising: a barrier configured to impeded or prevent particles shed by a robot in a first volume of space from entering a second volume of space in which the robot manipulates a workpiece; and a robot having three or more degrees of freedom, the robot comprising: a first portion disposed on a first side of the barrier in the first volume, the first portion comprising an actuator of the robot, the actuator being configured to drive movement of the robot to manipulate the workpiece; and a second portion disposed on a second side of the barrier in the second volume, the second portion comprising an end-effector of the robot by which the robot makes contact with the workpiece.

a second secondary member located on the second side of the sheet; and

a third secondary member located on the second side of the sheet,

wherein, the second primary member is magnetically coupled to the second secondary member and the third primary member is magnetically coupled to the third secondary member.

7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the first, the second, and the third primary members are situated in an equilateral triangle configuration on the first actuator.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein:

the first actuator is configured to move the first, the second, and the third primary members inward and outward radially.

9. The device of claim 8 , wherein:

the first, the second, and the third secondary members are configured to surround and grab an open-top vessel upon being moved inward radially.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the first secondary member comprises a housing that envelopes a magnet prevent direct contact of the open-top vessel with the magnet.

11. The device of claim 7 , wherein:

the first actuator is configured to rotate an assembly of the first primary member, the second primary member, and the third primary member around an axis perpendicular to a plane defined by the equilateral triangle configuration, the axis intersecting the plane at or near a center of the equilateral triangle configuration.

12. The device of claim 1 , the device further comprising:

a first plurality of bearings disposed between the first primary member and the first side of the sheet; and

a second plurality of bearings disposed between the first secondary member and the second side of the sheet.

13. The device of claim 1 , wherein:

the sheet is an air-permeable barrier;

the device comprises an air pump or fan configured to maintain higher air pressure on the second side of the sheet than the first side of the sheet; and

the first primary member is coupled to the secondary member via a suction force induced by a vacuum pump connected to the first primary member.

14. The device of claim 1 , wherein the sheet is a rigid, non-ferrous, non-magnetic barrier of substantially uniform thickness over a work area of the actuator.

15. The device of claim 1 , wherein:

the first actuator is coupled, with zero degrees of freedom, to a robotic motion system having two degrees of freedom, the robotic motion system comprising:

a first rail, having a first end and a second end;

a second rail, spaced from the first rail, the second rail having a first end and a second end, wherein the first rail and the second rail are parallel to one another;

a gantry, positioned perpendicular to the first rail and the second rail, the gantry having a first end movable along the first rail and a second end movable along the second rail;
