Abstract

A detachable tip is used in conjunction with a power adapter to provide DC power to an electronic device. The tip includes an input connector which detachably mates with a connector which is electrically coupled to the power adapter. An output connector of the tip detachably mates with the electronic device. Conductors within the tip transfer the DC power from the input connector to the output connector to provide the DC power to the electronic device. Circuitry within the tip transmits to the electronic device, via the output connector, a power output indication signal representative of an amount of power available to be supplied to the electronic device by the adapter.

Claims (25)

1. A power supply system comprising:

power circuitry configured to output direct-current (DC) power; and

data circuitry configured to receive a first signal from the portable electronic device and to provide a second signal to the portable electronic device, the data circuitry configured to be coupled to the portable electronic device via a connector that is disposed on a cable end, the connector configured to detachably couple to an input of the portable electronic device, the connector having a first conductor configured to transfer the DC power to the portable electronic device, a second conductor configured to transfer a ground reference to the portable electronic device, a third conductor configured to receive the first signal from the portable electronic device, and a fourth conductor configured to transfer the second signal from the data circuitry to the portable electronic device,

the data circuitry further configured, in response to receiving the first signal from the portable electronic device, to provide the second signal, the second signal comprising an analog signal having a parameter level corresponding to a power output capability of the power supply system.

2. The power supply system of claim 1 , wherein the power circuitry is configured to convert power received from an external power source to the DC power.

3. The power supply system of claim 1 , wherein the parameter level of the second signal is a current level.

4. The power supply system of claim 1 , wherein the connector is removable from the cable end.

5. The power supply system of claim 1 , wherein the data circuitry comprises a microcontroller.

6. The power supply system of claim 5 , wherein the data circuitry further comprises a memory.

7. The power supply system of claim 1 , wherein the portable electronic device is configured to selectively charge a battery within the portable electronic device based on the parameter level of the second signal.

8. The power supply system of claim 7 , wherein the portable electronic device is configured to charge the battery responsive to the power output capability exceeding a threshold.

9. The power supply system of claim 1 , wherein the portable electronic device comprises a notebook computer or a laptop computer.

10. The power supply system of claim 1 , wherein the portable electronic device comprises a phone.

11. The power supply system of claim 1 , wherein the portable electronic device comprises a digital music player.

12. A power supply system comprising:

power circuitry configured to provide direct-current (DC) power; and

data circuitry configured to receive a first signal from a portable electronic device and to provide a second signal to the portable electronic device via a connector, the connector configured to detachably mate with a port of the portable electronic device, the connector having a first conductor configured to transfer the DC power to the portable electronic device, a second conductor configured to transfer a ground reference to the portable electronic device, a third conductor configured to receive the first signal from the portable electronic device, and a fourth conductor configured to transfer the second signal from the data circuitry to the portable electronic device, wherein the data circuitry, in response to the first signal, is configured to provide the second signal to the portable electronic device, the second signal comprising an analog signal having a parameter level corresponding to a power output capability of the power supply system.

13. The power supply system of claim 12 , wherein the power circuitry is configured to convert power received from an external power source to the DC power.

14. The power supply system of claim 12 , wherein the parameter level of the second signal is a current level.

15. The power supply system of claim 12 , wherein the connector is disposed on a cable end.

16. The power supply system of claim 12 , wherein the data circuitry comprises a microcontroller.

17. The power supply system of claim 16 , wherein the data circuitry further comprises a memory.

18. The power supply system of claim 12 , wherein the portable electronic device comprises a notebook computer or a laptop computer.

19. The power supply system of claim 12 , wherein the portable electronic device comprises a phone.

20. The power supply system of claim 12 , wherein the portable electronic device comprises a digital music player.
