Abstract

Methods, systems, and computer-readable medium tracks locations of one or more surgical instruments. The method includes detecting a plurality of markers disposed on a distal end of a first surgical instrument within a field of view of a camera, calculating a position of the first surgical instrument based on a location of the plurality of markers within the field of view of the camera, determining the position of the first surgical instrument in relation to a second surgical instrument.

Claims (32)

1. A method of tracking positions of one or more surgical instruments, comprising:

detecting a plurality of markers disposed on a distal end of a first surgical instrument within a field of view of a camera;

calculating a position of the first surgical instrument based on a location of the plurality of markers detected within the field of view of the camera;

determining the position of the first surgical instrument in relation to a second surgical instrument; and

increasing the field of view of the camera to include the plurality of markers therein when the first surgical instrument is outside of the field of view of the camera.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first surgical instrument is coupled to a robotic arm having predetermined points used to calculate the position of the first surgical instrument.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein calculating the position of the first surgical instrument includes calculating a position of the predetermined points of the robotic arm to identify a position of a base of the robotic arm.

4. The method according to claim 1 , further including tracking the positions of the first surgical instrument by continuously updating the location of the detected plurality of markers.

5. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising storing the positions of the first surgical instrument.

6. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising displaying an indicator on a display identifying the position of the first surgical instrument when the first surgical instrument is outside of the field of view of the camera.

7. The method according to claim 1 , further including displaying a warning that the first surgical instrument is no longer within the field of view of the camera.

8. The method according to claim 7 , wherein displaying a warning includes prompting a user with a message.

9. The method according to claim 1 , further including calculating a distance the first surgical instrument is from the field of view of the camera.

10. The method according to claim 9 , further including displaying the calculated distance on a display device.

11. A method of tracking positions of one or more surgical instruments, comprising:

detecting a plurality of markers disposed on a distal end of a first surgical instrument within a field of view of a camera;

calculating a position of the first surgical instrument based on a location of the plurality of markers detected within the field of view of the camera;

determining the position of the first surgical instrument in relation to a second surgical instrument; and

determining an optimal position for the first surgical instrument within an operating room.

12. The method according to claim 11 , further including generating a map showing the position of the first surgical instrument within the operating room.

13. The method according to claim 12 , wherein generating the map includes generating a map showing relative positions of an operating table and the first surgical instrument.

14. The method according to claim 11 , further including displaying a warning that the first surgical instrument is no longer within the field of view of the camera.

15. The method according to claim 11 , further comprising displaying an indicator on a display identifying the position of the first surgical instrument when the first surgical instrument is outside of the field of view of the camera.

16. The method according to claim 11 , further including calculating a distance the first surgical instrument is from the field of view of the camera.

17. A method of tracking positions of one or more surgical instruments, comprising:

detecting a plurality of markers disposed on a distal end of a first surgical instrument within a field of view of a camera;

calculating a position of the first surgical instrument based on a location of the plurality of markers detected within the field of view of the camera;

determining the position of the first surgical instrument in relation to a second surgical instrument; and

disabling an ability to control the first surgical instrument when the detected plurality of markers falls outside the field of view of the camera.

18. The method according to claim 17 , further including displaying a warning that the first surgical instrument is no longer within the field of view of the camera.

19. The method according to claim 17 , further comprising displaying an indicator on a display identifying the position of the first surgical instrument when the first surgical instrument is outside of the field of view of the camera.

20. The method according to claim 17 , further including calculating a distance the first surgical instrument is from the field of view of the camera.
