Abstract

The invention relates to a nutritional composition comprising a Human Milk Oligosaccharide (HMO) having an effect on the promoting, enhancement or improvement of the short term memory of the subjects in infants and/or young children. The composition can be an infant formula. The HMO may be 2FL, Di FL and/or LNT and or LNnT or combinations thereof.

Claims (19)

1. A method to improve, enhance or promote declarative memory, short term memory and/or working memory in an infant or young mammal, the method comprising administering a nutritional composition comprising a combination of a human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) and a bovine milk oligosaccharide (BMO) to the infant or young mammal, wherein the HMO comprises 2′-fucosyllactose (2′FL) and lacto-N-neotetraose (LNnT); and the BMO comprises 3′-sialyllactose (3′-SL), 6′-sialyllactose (6′-SL) and a galacto-oligosaccharide (GOS).

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the declarative memory is recognition memory.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the human milk oligosaccharide further comprises lacto-N-tetraose (LNT).

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the HMO is present in an amount of from 0.1 to 10 g/L of the nutritional composition.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the nutritional composition further comprises a prebiotic, selected from the list consisting of inulin, xylooligosaccharides, polydextrose, fructose oligosaccharide (FOS), oligofructose (OF) and combinations thereof.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the bovine milk oligosaccharide further comprises at least one of an N-acetylated oligosaccharide, a fucosylated oligosaccharide or a combination thereof.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the N-acetylated oligosaccharide is selected from the group consisting of lacto-N-tetraose (LNT), lacto-N-neotetraose (LNnT) and a combination thereof.

8. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the fucosylated oligosaccharide is selected from the group consisting of 2′-fucosyllactose (2′FL), 3-fucosyllactose, difucosyllactose (diFL), lacto-N-fucopentaoses, lacto-N-difucohexaose I, fucosyllacto-N-hexaose, difucosyllacto-N-hexaose I and difucosyllacto-N-neohexaose II.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the nutritional composition further comprises a probiotic.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the nutritional composition is selected from the group consisting of an infant formula, a follow on formula, a human milk fortifier and a growing up milk.

11. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the fucosylated oligosaccharide is 2′-fucosyllactose (2-FL) and difucosyllactose (diFL).

12. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the prebiotic comprises Oligofructose (OF) and inulin in a weight ratio of 7:3.

13. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the prebiotic is an oligofructose (OF) in an amount of 0.1-20 g per 100 g of the nutritional composition on a dry weight basis.

14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein a ratio between the GOS and the oligofructose (OF) in the nutritional composition is of 9:1.

15. The method according to claim 1 , wherein a total amount of the 3′-SL and the 6′-SL is 0.05-2 g per 100 g of the nutritional composition on a dry weight basis.

16. The method according to claim 1 , wherein a weight ratio between the 3′-SL and the 6′-SL is in a range between 5:1 and 1:2.

17. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the LNnT is present in an amount of 0.1-3 g per 100 g of the nutritional composition on a dry weight basis.

18. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the 2′FL is present in an amount of 0.1-3 g per 100 g of the nutritional composition on a dry weight basis.

19. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the nutritional composition further comprises a protein source in an amount below 2.5 g/100 kcal of energy.
