Abstract

There is provided a near-eye device for augmenting a real world view. The near-eye device comprises a spatial light modulator comprising an array of phase modulating elements arranged to apply a phase delay distribution to incident light. The device further comprises a beam combiner comprising a first optical input arranged to receive spatially modulated light from the spatial light modulator and a second optical input having a field of view of the real world.

2. A near-eye device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the phase data mimics a spherical surface.

3. A near-eye device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the holographic data is a Fourier hologram and the frequency-space transform is a Fourier transform.

4. A near-eye device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the holographic data is a Fresnel hologram and the frequency-space transform is a Fresnel transform.

5. A near-eye device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to cause the spatial light modulator to modulate the incident light with data arranged to compensate for aberrations in other optical components of the near-eye device.

6. A near-eye device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the beam combiner further comprises an optical output arranged to combine the light received on the first optical input with light received on the second optical input.

7. A near-eye device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the light source is arranged to illuminate the spatial light modulator with a plane wave of light.

8. A near-eye device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the near-eye device is a pair of goggles or glasses.

9. A near-eye device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the spatial light modulator is displaying a phase delay distribution that modulates incident light with the holographic data and the phase data.

10. A method of providing augmented reality to a user, the method comprising:

providing holographic data representative of an image and phase data having a lensing effect;

spatially modulating light with the holographic data representative of the image, via a processor and a spatial light modulator, and the phase data having the lensing effect to form spatially-modulated light;

combining the spatially-modulated light with a field of view of the real world using a beam combiner to provide a combined view in which a holographic image resulting from the spatially-modulated light from the spatial light modulator augments the view of the real world; and

providing the combined view to the user's eye, wherein the phase data is configured to provide eye relief such that the holographic image appears to the user to come from a point in space further away than the spatial light modulator,

wherein the spatial light modulator is configured in a near-eye configuration with respect to the user, and wherein the user's eye performs a frequency-to-space transform of the spatially modulated light to form a holographic reconstruction of the image visible to the user as the holographic image.

11. A method of providing augmented reality as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the phase data mimics a spherical surface.

12. A method of providing augmented reality as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the holographic data is a Fourier hologram and the frequency-space transform is a Fourier transform.

13. A method of providing augmented reality as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the holographic data is a Fresnel hologram and the frequency-space transform is a Fresnel transform.

14. A method of providing augmented reality as claimed in claim 10 , further comprising:

providing data arranged to compensate for aberrations in optical components of the near-eye device; and
