Abstract

An amplification subsystem for a communication system includes a downstream amplifier configured to transmit a downstream signal within a first frequency range, an upstream amplifier configured to transmit an upstream signal within a second frequency range, and a bidirectional amplifier configured to selectively transmit a mid-band signal in either of the upstream and downstream direction.

Claims (26)

1. An amplification subsystem for a communication system including a first transceiver in communication with a second transceiver over a transmission medium, comprising:

a first amplifier configured to transmit a first signal, from the first transceiver to the second transceiver, within a first frequency range;

a second amplifier configured to transmit a second signal, from the second transceiver to the first transceiver, within a second frequency range different from the first frequency range;

a first diplexer disposed along the transmission medium between the first transceiver and the first amplifier;

a second diplexer disposed along the transmission medium between the second transceiver and the second amplifier;

a first bypass circuit in parallel with the first diplexer, and including a first switched bandpass filter configured to transmit the first signal within a third frequency range between the first and second frequency ranges; and

a second bypass circuit in parallel with the second diplexer, and including a second switched bandpass filter configured to transmit the second signal within the third frequency range.

2. The amplification subsystem of claim 1 , wherein the first bypass circuit comprises (i) a first input communicatively coupled to the transmission medium between the first transceiver and the first diplexer, and (ii) a first output communicatively coupled to the transmission medium between the first diplexer and the first amplifier, and wherein the second bypass circuit comprises (i) a second input communicatively coupled to the transmission medium between the second transceiver and the second diplexer, and (ii) a second output communicatively coupled to the transmission medium between the second diplexer and the second amplifier.

3. The amplification subsystem of claim 2 , wherein the first bypass circuit further comprises a first switch, wherein the second bypass circuit further comprises a second switch, and wherein the first and second switches are configured to be responsive to a command from one of the first and second transceivers.

4. The amplification subsystem of claim 3 , wherein the communication system is operable for full duplex transmission.

5. The amplification subsystem of claim 3 , wherein the first and second switches are further configured such both of the first and second switches are open as a default setting absent receipt of the command.

6. The amplification subsystem of claim 3 , wherein the first and second switches are further configured to both open upon receipt of the command.

7. The amplification subsystem of claim 6 , wherein transmission of the first and second signals within the third frequency range is blocked.

8. The amplification subsystem of claim 3 , wherein, upon receipt of the command, the first switch is further configured to close and the second switch is further configured to open.

9. The amplification subsystem of claim 8 , wherein transmission of the first signal within the third frequency range is enabled, and wherein transmission of the second signal within the third frequency range is blocked.

10. The amplification subsystem of claim 3 , wherein, upon receipt of the command, the first switch is further configured to open and the second switch is further configured to close.

11. The amplification subsystem of claim 10 , wherein transmission of the first signal within the third frequency range is blocked, and wherein transmission of the second signal within the third frequency range is enabled.

12. The amplification subsystem of claim 3 , further comprising a first directional coupler operably connecting the first transceiver to the first input and a second directional coupler operably connecting the first output to the first amplifier.

13. The amplification subsystem of claim 12 , further comprising a third directional coupler operably connecting the second transceiver to the second input and a fourth directional coupler operably connecting the second output to the second amplifier.

14. The amplification subsystem of claim 3 , wherein the command comprises a communication from a modem termination system (MTS) of the communication system to a modem of the communication system.

15. The amplification subsystem of claim 1 , wherein the first, second, and third signals are configured to conform to a data over cable service interface specification (DOCSIS) protocol.

16. The amplification subsystem of claim 1 , wherein the communication system comprises a cable network.

17. The amplification subsystem of claim 1 , wherein the first frequency range is between 5 MHz and 85 MHz.

18. The amplification subsystem of claim 17 , wherein the second frequency range is between 750 MHz and 1800 MHz.

19. The amplification subsystem of claim 18 , wherein the third frequency range is between 108 MHz and 684 MHz.

20. The amplification subsystem of claim 17 , wherein the second frequency range is within a spectrum greater than 750 MHz.
