Abstract

An embodiment of an independent cooling circuit for selectively delivering cooling fluid to a component of a gas turbine system includes: a plurality of independent circuits of cooling channels embedded within an exterior wall of the component, wherein the plurality of circuits of cooling channels are interwoven together; an impingement plate; and a plurality of feed tubes connecting the impingement plate to the exterior wall of the component and fluidly coupling each of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels to at least one supply of cooling fluid, wherein, in each of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels, the cooling fluid flows through the plurality of feed tubes into the circuit of cooling channels only in response to a formation of a breach in the exterior wall of the component that exposes at least one of the cooling channels of the circuit of cooling channels.

Claims (37)

a plurality of independent circuits of cooling channels embedded within an exterior wall of the component, wherein the plurality of circuits of cooling channels are interwoven together;

an impingement plate; and

a plurality of feed tubes connecting the impingement plate to the exterior wall of the component and fluidly coupling each of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels to at least one supply of cooling fluid,

wherein, in each of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels, the cooling fluid flows through the plurality of feed tubes into the circuit of cooling channels only in response to a formation of a breach in the exterior wall of the component that exposes at least one of the cooling channels of the circuit of cooling channels.

2. The independent cooling circuit according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one supply of cooling fluid comprises a plurality of independent supplies of cooling fluid, each providing cooling fluid to at least one of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels.

3. The independent cooling circuit according to claim 2 , wherein the plurality of independent supplies of cooling fluid includes a supply of reused cooling fluid.

4. The independent cooling circuit according to claim 3 , wherein the reused cooling fluid comprises post-impingement cooling fluid, the independent cooling circuit further comprising a plurality of openings in an interior surface of the exterior wall for directing the post-impingement cooling fluid from an impingement cavity in the component to at least one of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels.

5. The independent cooling circuit according to claim 1 , wherein the cooling channels of a first and a second of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels are interlaced at right angles relative to one another.

6. The independent cooling circuit according to claim 5 , wherein the cooling channels of a third of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels is interlaced at an acute angle relative to the cooling channels of the first and second plurality of circuits of cooling channels.

7. The independent cooling circuit according to claim 1 , wherein, in each of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels, each cooling channel extends between, and is fluidly coupled to, a plurality of the feed tubes.

8. The independent cooling circuit according to claim 7 , wherein at least one cooling channel of at least one of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels extends non-linearly between a plurality of the feed tubes such that a distance between the at least one cooling channel and an outer surface of the external wall of the component varies.

9. The independent cooling circuit according to claim 1 , wherein the cooling channels of a first of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels extends between a plurality of the feed tubes in a first direction and the cooling channels of a second of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels extend between a plurality of the feed tubes in a second, different direction.

10. The independent cooling circuit according to claim 1 , further comprising a wall coupon formed using an additive manufacturing process, the wall coupon including a section of the exterior wall of the component and the plurality of feed tubes, wherein the plurality of circuits of cooling channels are embedded within the section of the exterior wall.

11. The independent cooling circuit according to claim 10 , wherein the wall coupon includes a plurality of powder removal openings extending from at least one of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels to an outer surface of the section of the exterior wall.

12. A cooling system, comprising:

a component of a gas turbine system; and

an independent cooling circuit for selectively delivering cooling fluid to the component of a gas turbine system, including:

a plurality of independent circuits of cooling channels embedded within an exterior wall of the component, wherein the plurality of circuits of cooling channels are interwoven together;

an impingement plate; and

a plurality of feed tubes connecting the impingement plate to the exterior wall of the component and fluidly coupling each of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels to at least one supply of cooling fluid,

wherein, in each of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels, the cooling fluid flows through the plurality of feed tubes into the circuit of cooling channels only in response to a formation of a breach in the exterior wall of the component that exposes at least one of the cooling channels of the circuit of cooling channels.

13. The cooling system according to claim 12 , wherein the at least one supply of cooling fluid comprises a plurality of independent supplies of cooling fluid, each providing cooling fluid to at least one of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels.

14. The cooling system according to claim 12 , wherein the plurality of independent supplies of cooling fluid includes a supply of reused cooling fluid.

15. The cooling system according to claim 12 , wherein the cooling channels of a first and a second of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels are interlaced at right angles relative to one another.

16. The cooling system according to claim 15 , wherein the cooling channels of a third of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels is interlaced at an acute angle relative to the cooling channels of the first and second plurality of circuits of cooling channels.

17. The cooling system according to claim 12 , wherein at least one cooling channel of at least one of the plurality of circuits of cooling channels extends non-linearly between a plurality of the feed tubes such that a distance between the at least one cooling channel and an outer surface of the external wall of the component varies.

18. The cooling system according to claim 1 , further comprising a wall coupon formed using an additive manufacturing process, the wall coupon including a section of the exterior wall of the component and the plurality of feed tubes, wherein the plurality of circuits of cooling channels are embedded within the section of the exterior wall, the wall coupon further including a plurality of powder removal openings extending from at least one of the circuits of cooling channels to an outer surface of the section of the exterior wall.
