Abstract

A robot configured to use a gripper to grasp one or more tools is disclosed. In various embodiments, the robot comprises a robotic arm having a gripper disposed at a free moving end of the robotic arm, and a set of two or more tools configured to grasped or otherwise engaged by the gripper. Each tool in the set of two or more tools may be disposed in a corresponding tool holder, optionally attached to the robot or situated near the robot. The robot is configured to use the gripper to retrieve a selected tool from its tool holder to perform a task; use the tool to perform the task; and return the tool to its tool holder.

Claims (25)

1. A robot, comprising:

a robotic arm having a gripper disposed at a free moving end of the robotic arm; and

a set of two or more tools configured to be grasped or otherwise engaged by the gripper;

wherein the robot is configured to select from the set of two or more tools a selected tool to be used to perform a task; use the gripper to retrieve the selected tool from a location; use the tool to perform the task; and return the tool to the location.

2. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the robot determines the selected tool based at least in part on an attribute of an object with which the task is associated.

3. The robot of claim 2 , wherein the attribute comprises one or more of a size, weight, material, density, rigidity, and fragility of the object.

4. The robot of claim 2 , wherein the robot further includes a camera and is configured to determine the attribute based at least in part on image data generated by the camera.

5. The robot of claim 2 , wherein the robot is configured via machine learning to recognize the object and determine the attribute.

6. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the location comprises a tool holder.

7. The robot of claim 6 , wherein the tool holder is mounted on the robot in a manner that allows the tool holder to be removed and replaced with a different tool in a different holder.

8. The robot of claim 7 , wherein the tool holder is included in a removable first set of tools and the robot is configured to replace the removable first set of tools and associated tool holders with a replacement set of tools and tool holders.

The robot of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the tools in the set of two or more tools includes an electrical connector to enable electrical power to be supplied from the robot to the tool via a corresponding electrical connector incorporated into or otherwise associated with the gripper when the gripper is engaged with the tool.

10. The robot of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the tools in the set of two or more tools includes a wireless charging pad, antenna, or other physical interface to enable electrical power to be supplied wirelessly from the robot to the tool.

The robot of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the tools in the set of two or more tools includes a pneumatic or hydraulic connector to enable a pressurized fluid to be supplied from the robot to the tool via a corresponding connector incorporated into or otherwise associated with the gripper when the gripper is engaged with the tool.

12. The robot of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the tools in the set of two or more tools is sized and configured to operate on objects of a different scale than the gripper.

13. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the gripper comprises a two-fingered gripper.

14. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the gripper comprises three or more fingers.

15. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the gripper includes a plurality of articulated digits each having two or more segments.

16. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the robot is configured to retrieve the selected tool at least in part using a model of the robot and a position of the location relative to a frame of reference.

17. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the location comprises a tool holder, each tool in the set of two or more tools has an associated tool holder, and each of the tool holders is configured to hold its corresponding tool in a restrained position that facilitates retrieval by the gripper.

18. The robot of claim 17 , wherein the tool holder is further configured to release the tool upon receiving an indication that the gripper has mated with the tool.

19. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the robot is configured to use the gripper to retrieve the tool by using the gripper to grasp the tool.

20. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the robot is configured to use the gripper to retrieve the tool by inserting the gripper into the tool.

21. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the robot is further configured to use a sensor associated with the gripper to retrieve and use the selected tool.

22. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the selected tool includes a sensor and the robot is further configured to receive and use a sensor output of the sensor to use the selected tool to perform the task.
