Abstract

A remote-controlled retriever for collecting a ball on a sports playing surface and for controllably releasing the ball includes a front end ball collector having two spaced-apart blades defining a ball collection space. Each blade includes a passive or an active detent for retaining the collected ball in the collection space until a programmed or manually-directed release toward a target location such as a tennis baseline. The retriever includes a processor-controller for controlling and directing the retriever during a retrieval session.

a means for steering the retriever;

a receiver for receiving retriever control signals;

a retriever processor-controller, having inputs for receiving control and data input signals and outputs for retriever command and control signals, said processor-controller being programmed with instructions that upon execution generate output signals based on the input signals for controlling the retriever, and said processor-controller also being programmed with instructions that upon execution direct the retriever to move to a ball release location, inertially release the ball utilizing a momentum of the retriever horizontally along the playing surface toward a target location, and return to a standby location;

an on-board power supply;

a pair of opposing blades each including a longitudinally-extending sidewall spaced mutually apart to thereby define a fore ball collection space therebetween having a width sufficient to receive and release a ball and terminating in a fixed opening at the fore end of the retriever to allow unimpeded ball transit therethrough into and out of the ball collection space during ball retrievals;

at least one ball proximity sensor positioned alongside the ball collection space;

at least one active detent positioned on a sidewall of a blade alongside said collection space and actuatable in cooperation with said at least one ball proximity sensor; and

wherein the processor-controller is programmed with instructions that upon execution selectively activate and deactivate said at least one active detent based on proximity sensor input signals for controlled collections and releases of a ball.

2. The retriever of claim 1 , wherein each blade has an outwardly-flared tip.

3. The retriever of claim 1 , further comprising an aft ball collection space and a first ball ejector positioned therein for releasing a collected ball in a vertical direction.

4. The retriever of claim 1 , wherein the ball is a tennis ball and the playing surface is a tennis court, wherein the retriever further comprises a means for determining a location of the retriever with an output connected to an input of the processor-controller, and further comprising the processor-controller being programmed with instructions that upon execution process the retriever location input signal into a retriever control output signal for directing the retriever to collect and detain the tennis ball within the ball collection space until the ball release, move to the ball release location on the tennis court, release the tennis ball horizontally along the court surface the target location, and return to the standby position.

5. A method for retrieving a tennis ball during active play, comprising:

providing (i) a retriever for collecting and controllably releasing a tennis ball horizontally on a tennis court surface, said retriever having a fore end and an aft end, comprising

a chassis;

at least one wheel mounted on said chassis;

a drive system coupled to said at least one wheel;

a means for steering the retriever;

a receiver for receiving retriever control signals;

a retriever processor-controller, having inputs for receiving control and data input signals and outputs for retriever command and control signals, said processor-controller being programmed with instructions that upon execution generate output signals based on the input signals for controlling the retriever and that after release of a ball toward a target location return the retriever to a standby location;

an on-board power supply;

a pair of opposing blades each having a sidewall spaced mutually apart to thereby define a fore ball collection space therebetween having a width sufficient to receive and release a collected ball; and

at least one ball proximity sensor positioned alongside said collection space and at least one active detent positioned on a blade sidewall alongside the collection space, wherein the processor further includes programmed instructions to selectively activate and deactivate said at least one active detent based on sensor input signals for controlled collections and releases of a ball;

positioning the retriever in the standby location;

directing the retriever to collect a ball;

selectively activating and deactivating said at least one active detent to effectuate a controlled collection and release of the ball;

inertially releasing the ball horizontally on the tennis court surface toward the target location by utilizing a momentum of the retriever to thereby effectuate the ball return to the target location; and

returning the retriever as directed by the processor-controller to the standby position.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein said blade sidewalls terminate in a fixed opening at the fore end of the retriever to allow unimpeded ball transit therethrough into and out of the ball collection space during ball retrievals.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the retriever further comprises a means for determining a location of the retriever, and wherein the processor-controller is programmed with instructions that upon execution process a retriever location input signal into a retriever control output signal for directing the retriever to collect and detain the tennis ball within the ball collection space until the ball release, move to the ball release location, release the tennis ball horizontally along the court surface toward the target, and return to the standby position, and

further comprising the processor-controller processing the retriever location input signal into a retriever control output signal, directing the retriever to collect and detain the tennis ball within the ball collection space, moving to the ball release location, releasing the tennis ball horizontally along the court surface toward the target, and returning to the standby position.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the retriever further includes a horizontal ball ejector positioned aft of the fore ball collection space, and further comprising activating the horizontal ball ejector during a horizontal ball release.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the retriever further includes a vertical ball ejector positioned aft of the fore ball collection space, and further comprising activating the vertical ball ejector during a vertical ball release.

10. The method of claim 5 , wherein inertially releasing the ball is directed by the processor-controller according to programmed instructions calculating a retriever deceleration whereby the ball rolls to the target.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the retrieval includes a multi-ball retrieval whereby the ball retrieve sequence is according to programmed instructions that direct the retriever to collect at least two balls on one side of the court and according to a calculated retrieval path optimized for subsequent release of the collected balls to the target.

12. The method of claim 5 , further comprising providing:

(ii) a remote control, and

where directing the retriever to collect a ball is conducted manually via the remote control.

13. The method of claim 5 , wherein the retriever further comprises a ball support surface in the collection space having a fore end terminating in an adjustable-height lip, and further comprising adjusting the height of the lip to facilitate ball retrievals.

14. The method of claim 5 , further comprising providing a docking station, positioning the retriever therein, positioning the docking station at the standby location from where the retriever commences a retrieval by exiting the docking station, and after ball release redocks therein.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising providing a rollable frame for securing the docking station and retriever thereon.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising providing a means for attaching the frame to a net post to thus position the docking station and retriever thereby as a standby location for retrievals.

17. The method of claim 5 , wherein the processor-controller includes a retrieval abort routine and upon processing an abort command directs the retriever to terminate a retrieval.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the processor-controller further includes a post-abort routine that upon aborting a retrieval directs the retriever to return to the standby position.

19. The method of claim 5 , wherein the processor-controller further includes a manual override routine that upon execution hands off processor-controller retriever control to an operator manual control mode.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the processor-controller further includes a manual override routine that upon execution hands off processor-controller retriever control to an operator manual control mode.
