Abstract

An electronic device comprises a display and a controller. The controller is configured to provide a first frequency refresh rate to the display. The controller is also configured to generate a control signal configured to control emission of a light emitting diode of a display pixel of the display at a second frequency based on whether the first frequency refresh rate of the display is less than a predetermined threshold value.

Claims (29)

1. An electronic device, comprising:

a display having a plurality of pixels, each of which comprises a light-emitting diode and a switch directly coupled to an anode of the light-emitting diode; and

a controller configured to provide data signals to the plurality of pixels at a refresh rate and configured to turn on the switch in at least one of the plurality of pixels at a rate greater than the refresh rate to prevent the at least one of the plurality of pixels from emitting light.

2. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the refresh rate is less than a predetermined threshold value.

3. The electronic device of claim 2 , wherein the controller is configured to turn on the switch in at least one of the plurality of pixels to prevent the at least one of the plurality of pixels from emitting light when one of the data signals for the at least one the plurality of pixels is configured to cause the at least one of the plurality of pixels to display black.

4. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to turn on the switch in at least one of the plurality of pixels to prevent the at least one of the plurality of pixels from emitting light when the refresh rate is less than a predetermined threshold value.

5. The electronic device of claim 4 , wherein the controller is further configured to control the switch using a switching rate that matches the refresh rate when the refresh rate is at or above the predetermined threshold value.

6. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to turn on the switch in at least one of the plurality of pixels to prevent the at least one of the plurality of pixels from emitting light when one of the data signals for the at least one the plurality of pixels is configured to cause the at least one of the plurality of pixels to display black.

7. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to prevent the at least one of the plurality of pixels from emitting light by preventing a voltage at the anode of the light-emitting diode in the at least one of the plurality of pixels from reaching or exceeding a turn-on voltage level.

8. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to prevent the at least one of the plurality of pixels from emitting light by using the switch to reset the anode of the light-emitting diode in the at least one of the plurality of pixels.

9. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the rate at which the switched is turned on is a multiple of the refresh rate.

10. A display pixel, comprising:

a light-emitting diode having an anode terminal;

a data line configured to supply data signals to the display pixel at a refresh rate less than a predetermined threshold value; and

a switch that is directly coupled to the anode terminal of the light-emitting diode and that is activated at a rate different than the refresh rate when the refresh rate is less than the predetermined threshold level to ensure that the display pixel displays a black level.

11. The display pixel of claim 10 , wherein the switch is configured to prevent the display pixel from emitting light when displaying the black level.

12. The display pixel of claim 10 , wherein at least one of the data signals is configured to direct the display pixel to display the black level.

13. The display pixel of claim 10 , wherein the rate is greater than the refresh rate when the refresh rate is less than the predetermined threshold value.

14. The display pixel of claim 10 , wherein the rate matches the refresh rate when the refresh rate is equal to or greater than the predetermined threshold value.

15. The display pixel of claim 10 , wherein the switch is configured to reset the anode terminal of the light-emitting diode to prevent a voltage at the anode terminal from reaching or exceeding a turn-on voltage level.

16. A method for operating display circuitry, comprising:

using a light-emitting diode to emit light;

using a data line to supply data signals at a refresh rate to a display pixel having the light-emitting diode; and

with a switch directly coupled to an anode of the light-emitting diode, ensuring that the display pixel displays a black level by resetting the anode at a reset rate greater than the refresh rate.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein resetting the anode at the reset rate greater than the refresh rate prevents the light-emitting diode from emitting light.

18. The method of claim 16 , further comprising:

adjusting the reset rate as a function of the refresh rate.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the reset rate is greater than the refresh rate when the refresh rate is less than a predetermined refresh rate.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the reset rate is some multiple of the refresh rate when the refresh rate is equal to or greater than the predetermined refresh rate.
