Abstract

Embodiments of the invention relate generally to tissue anchors and methods of delivering same to the intervertebral disc or other sites within the body. In some embodiments, the anchors provide pull-out resistance, stability and/or maximize contact with tissue involving a minimum amount of penetration. In some embodiments, delivery methods are minimally invasive and include linear, lateral, and off-angle implantation or driving of anchors along, against or within tissue surfaces.

Claims (38)

1. A method of delivering an annulus augmentation device, the method comprising:

inserting an anchor delivery system to a location of an intervertebral disc positioned between two adjacent vertebral bodies,

the anchor delivery system comprising a delivery tool and a bone anchor,

wherein the delivery tool comprises an elongate guide body and a push rod slidably mounted within said elongate guide body,

advancing a distal end of the elongate guide body until it is in contact with an outer surface of one of the two adjacent vertebral bodies, wherein the outer surface is perpendicular to an endplate surface of the one of the two adjacent vertebral bodies;

striking a proximal end of the push rod so as to cause a distal end of the push rod to contact and drive the bone anchor out of the delivery tool and into the outer surface of the one of the two adjacent vertebral bodies.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bone anchor comprises a prosthetic barrier coupled to the anchor.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the prosthetic barrier is adapted to transition from a folded configuration to a deployed configuration during implantation.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising aligning the bone anchor with respect to a top of the endplate surface and the outer surface of the of the one of the two adjacent vertebral bodies to facilitate proper implantation trajectory.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the bone anchor comprises a biologically active agent.

6. An anchor delivery system comprising:

a bone anchor configured for implantation into an outer surface of a vertebral body that is perpendicular to an endplate surface of the vertebral body; and

a delivery tool comprising an elongate guide body and a push rod slidably mounted within said guide body,

wherein said guide body comprises a proximal end and a distal end,

wherein the guide body is adapted to retain said anchor in a pre-loaded manner,

wherein the bone anchor is at least partially mounted within the distal end of the guide body prior to implantation into the outer surface of the vertebral body, and

wherein said push rod is operable to contact said anchor via linear advancement of said push rod to drive said anchor into the outer surface of the vertebral body.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the bone anchor is configured for countersinking within said outer surface of the vertebral body such that no portion of said bone anchor remains exterior to said outer surface.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein at least a portion of the bone anchor comprises a biologically active agent.

9. The system of claim 6 , wherein the bone anchor comprises a prosthetic barrier coupled to the anchor, wherein the barrier is adapted to be positioned along the guide body prior to implantation.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the prosthetic barrier comprises mesh.

11. The system of claim 6 , wherein the push rod comprises a proximal end having a striking surface that is adapted to be hammered and a distal end that is adapted to transmit force to the anchor.

12. An anchor delivery system comprising:

a bone anchor configured for implantation into an outer surface of a vertebral body that is perpendicular to an endplate surface of the vertebral body; and

a delivery tool comprising an elongate guide body and a push rod slidably mounted within said guide body,

wherein said guide body comprises a proximal end and a distal end,

wherein the guide body comprises a guide way chamber terminating in an opening at the distal end of the guide body,

wherein the guide body is adapted to retain said anchor prior to implantation,

wherein the bone anchor is at least partially inserted within the distal end of the guide body prior to implantation, and

wherein said push rod is operable to contact said anchor in said guide way chamber via linear advancement of said push rod to drive said anchor into the outer surface of the vertebral body.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the guide body has a length in a range of between 10 cm and 30 cm and a width in a range between 0.5 cm and 1.5 cm.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the push rod has a length in a range of between 15 cm and 40 cm and a width in a range between 0.1 cm and 1 cm.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the guide body comprises a cylindrical grip.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the bone anchor is configured for countersinking within said outer surface of the vertebral body such that no portion of said bone anchor remains exterior to said outer surface.

17. The system of claim 12 , wherein at least a portion of the bone anchor comprises a biologically active agent.

18. The system of claim 12 , wherein the bone anchor comprises a prosthetic barrier coupled to the anchor, wherein the barrier is adapted to be positioned along the guide body prior to implantation.

19. The system of claim 12 , wherein the bone anchor is pre-loaded within the delivery tool.

20. The system of claim 12 , further comprising a sleeve adapted to fit over the distal end of the guide body.
