Abstract

Methods and apparatus for the inactivation of infectious agents in, on or around a catheter residing in a patient's body cavity. The method comprises a coupling adapter for facilitating the transmission of non-ultraviolet sterilizing electromagnetic radiation (EMR) substantially axially along an optical element into the catheter body. Through delivery of the sterilizing EMR to particular areas of highest infection, the present disclosure is able to inactivate the major sources of infection in catheters.

Claims (34)

1. A method for assembling a medical device assembly for insertion into a cavity of a patient's body to deliver electromagnetic radiation (EMR) and for drainage of a fluid from the patient's body comprising the steps of:

providing a catheter having an elongate catheter body with at least one internal lumen, a coupling end, a distal end tip and an inflatable balloon, the distal end tip being insertable into the cavity of the patient's body, the inflatable balloon being disposed proximate the distal end tip and being inflatable by delivering an inflation fluid to the balloon;

applying an optical element within the catheter body, the optical element being conducive to the axial propagation of a sterilizing EMR through the catheter; and

coupling an EMR source to the catheter body, the EMR source for providing non-ultraviolet, sterilizing EMR that propagates axially and irradiates outwardly into the patient's body along at least a portion of the catheter, the non-ultraviolet, sterilizing EMR having an intensity comprising a radiant exposure of at least 0.1 J/cm 2 and up to 100 J/cm 2 and power of at least 0.005 mW and up to 1 Watt, such intensity being sufficient to inactivate one or more infectious agents.

2. The method as in claim 1 , wherein the medical device assembly further comprises a convergence chamber with at least one fluid line and further comprising the step of connecting the convergence chamber between the coupling end of the catheter body and the EMR source and the step of applying an optical feature to the convergence chamber to direct sterilizing EMR for sterilizing the at least one of the convergence chamber, the fluid line and any fluid therein.

3. The method as in claim 2 , wherein the optical feature has at least one of a reflective surface, a lens, and a fiber optic.

4. The method as in claim 1 , wherein the medical device assembly is configured to facilitate the drainage of fluid from the patient's body.

5. The method as in claim 1 , wherein the EMR source has an adjustable duty cycle.

6. The method as in claim 5 , wherein the adjustable duty cycle is set to provide the EMR at predetermined times within the adjustable duty cycle and for predetermined time periods during the adjustable duty cycle.

7. The method as in claim 1 , wherein immediately after insertion of the medical device assembly into the cavity of the patient's body the EMR source provides non-ultraviolet, sterilizing EMR having the intensity being sufficient to inactivate one or more infectious agents, thereby inhibiting biofilm growth.

8. A method for implementing a medical device assembly to deliver electromagnetic radiation (EMR) into a cavity of a patient's body, the medical device assembly for insertion into the cavity of the patient's body for drainage of a fluid from the patient's body comprising the steps of:

providing a catheter having an elongate catheter body with at least one internal lumen, a coupling end, a distal end tip and an inflatable balloon, the distal end tip being insertable into the cavity of the patient's body, the inflatable balloon being disposed proximate the distal end tip and being inflatable by delivering an inflation fluid to the balloon;

applying an optical element within the catheter body, the optical element being conducive to the axial propagation of a sterilizing electromagnetic radiation (EMR) through the catheter body;

coupling an EMR source to the catheter body; and

the EMR source for providing non-ultraviolet, sterilizing EMR having an intensity comprising a radiant exposure of at least 0.1 J/cm 2 and up to 100 J/cm 2 and power of at least 0.005 mW and up to 1 Watt, such intensity being sufficient to inactivate one or more infectious agents.

9. The method as in claim 8 wherein the medical device assembly further comprises a convergence chamber with at least one fluid line and further comprising the steps of:

connecting the convergence chamber between the coupling end of the catheter body and the EMR source; and

applying an optical feature to the convergence chamber to direct sterilizing EMR for sterilizing the at least one of the convergence chamber, the fluid line, and any fluid in the fluid line.

10. The method as in claim 9 , wherein the optical feature has at least one of a reflective surface, a lens, and a fiber optic.

11. The method as in claim 8 , wherein the medical device assembly is configured to facilitate the drainage of fluid from the patient's body.

12. The method as in claim 8 , wherein the medical device assembly is configured to facilitate the introduction of fluid into the patient's body.

13. The method as in claim 8 , wherein the EMR source has an adjustable duty cycle.

14. The method as in claim 13 , wherein the adjustable duty cycle provides the EMR at effective times and for beneficial time periods.

15. The method as in claim 8 , wherein the EMR source provides EMR sufficient to inactivate biofilm growth.

16. A method for implementing a medical device assembly having a catheter with an elongate catheter body for insertion into a cavity of a patient's body, the catheter for drainage of a fluid from the patient's body, the elongate catheter body having at least one internal lumen, a coupling end, and a distal end tip, the method comprising the steps of:

applying an optical element within the elongate catheter body, the optical element being conducive to the axial propagation of a sterilizing electromagnetic radiation (EMR) through the catheter body;

connecting an EMR source to the catheter body; and

the EMR source providing non-ultraviolet, sterilizing EMR having an intensity comprising a radiant exposure of at least 0.1 J/cm 2 and up to 100 J/cm 2 and power of at least 0.005 mW and up to 1 Watt, such intensity being sufficient to inactivate one or more infectious agents.

17. The method as in claim 16 , wherein the medical device assembly is configured to facilitate the introduction of fluid into the patient's body.

18. The method as in claim 16 , wherein the EMR source has an adjustable duty cycle and the adjustable duty cycle provides the EMR at effective times and for beneficial time periods.

19. The method as in claim 16 , wherein the EMR source provides EMR sufficient to inactivate biofilm growth.

20. The method as in claim 16 wherein the medical device assembly further comprises a convergence chamber with at least one fluid line and further comprising the steps of:

connecting the convergence chamber between the coupling end of the catheter body and the EMR source; and

applying an optical feature to the convergence chamber to direct sterilizing EMR for sterilizing the at least one of the convergence chamber, the fluid line, and any fluid in the fluid line, the optical feature has at least one of a reflective surface, a lens, and a fiber optic.
