Abstract

A map image is displayed via a user interface. A user selection of a location marker or one of a set of textual driving directions is received via the user interface. In response to the received user selection, an interactive information window overlaid within the map image is generated. Generating the interactive information window includes providing additional information regarding a location related to the marker or to the one of the set of textual driving directions.

Claims (36)

1. A method of processing geographic queries, the method comprising:

receiving, by one or more processors from a user via a user interface, a shortcut name assigned by the user to a certain location and associated with one of (i) an address book stored in a memory of the user device, (ii) the user's home, or (iii) the user's place of work;

receiving, via a text entry field, a search query including the shortcut name;

displaying, by the one or more processors, a map image related to the certain location; and

causing a jump action in the map image in response to the shortcut name having been entered or selected, the jump action including a sequence of (i) zooming out, (ii) panning, and (iii) zooming down on a target view.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the search query includes receiving a combined search request specifying an item to search near the location corresponding to the name.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein receiving the combined search request includes receiving the item and the name via a single text field.

4. The method of claim 2 implemented in a user device, further comprising parsing the combined search request at the user device.

5. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium encoded with instructions, that when executed by a processor, cause the processor to display a map within a display page, the instructions comprising instructions for:

receiving, from a user via a user interface, a shortcut name assigned by the user to a certain location and associated with one of (i) an address book stored in a memory of the user device, (ii) the user's home, or (iii) the user's place of work;

receiving, via a text entry field, a search query including the shortcut name; and

displaying a map image related to the certain location; and

causing a jump action in the map image in response to the shortcut name having been entered or selected, the jump action including a sequence of (i) zooming out, (ii) panning, and (iii) zooming down on a target view.

6. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 5 , wherein receiving the search query includes receiving a combined search request specifying an item to search near the location corresponding to the name.

7. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 6 , wherein receiving the combined search request includes receiving the item and the name via a single text field.

8. The non-transitory computer-readable storage of claim 6 implemented in a user device, further comprising instructions for parsing the combined search request at the user device.

9. A computing device comprising:

one or more processors;

a user interface; and

a non-transitory computer-readable medium storing thereon instructions that, when executed by the or more processors, cause the computing device to:

receive, from a user via the user interface, a shortcut name assigned by the user to a certain location and associated with one of (i) an address book stored in a memory of the user device, (ii) the user's home, or (iii) the user's place of work,

receive, via a text entry field, a search query including the shortcut name,

display a map image related to the certain location, wherein:

the shortcut name associated with the user's home is “home,” and

the shortcut name associated with the user's place of work is “work”.

10. The computing device of claim 9 , wherein the instructions cause the computing device to receive a combined search request specifying an item to search near the location corresponding to the name.

11. The computing device of claim 10 , wherein the instructions cause the computing device to receive the item and the name via a single text field.

12. The computing device of claim 10 , wherein the instructions cause the computing device to parse the combined search request at the user device.

13. The computing device of claim 9 , wherein the instructions further cause the computing device to:

cause a jump action in the map image in response to the shortcut name having been entered or selected, the jump action including a sequence of (i) zooming out, (ii) panning, and (iii) zooming down on a target view.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the shortcut name associated with the user's home is “home,” and

the shortcut name associated with the user's place of work is “work”.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein:

the shortcut name associated with the user's home is “home,” and

the shortcut name associated with the user's place of work is “work”.
