Abstract

An antenna system for tissue ablation includes an energy transmission member, an antenna body coupled to the energy transmission member, a fluid source, and a choke member comprising an integrally formed choke body and choke connector electrically coupled to the energy transmission member by the choke connector. The choke body defines an outermost portion of the choke member. The choke body has an axial length and the choke connector extends along a majority of the length of the choke body and contacts the choke body along the majority of the length. The choke connector is in direct contact with a fluid from the fluid source. The choke connector is disposed between the choke body and the energy transmission member. The choke connector forms a delivery path for the fluid between the choke body and the energy transmission member. The choke connector and the choke body are a continuous wire mesh.

Claims (29)

1. An antenna system for tissue ablation, the antenna system comprising:

an energy transmission member;

an antenna body coupled to the energy transmission member;

a fluid source; and

a choke member comprising an integrally formed choke body and choke connector electrically coupled to the energy transmission member by the choke connector, the choke body defining an outermost portion of the choke member, the choke body having an axial length and the choke connector extending along a majority of the axial length of the choke body and contacting the choke body along the majority of the axial length, the choke connector in direct contact with a fluid from the fluid source, the choke connector disposed between the choke body and the energy transmission member, the choke connector forming a delivery path for the fluid between the choke body and the energy transmission member, wherein the choke connector and the choke body are formed of a continuous wire mesh.

2. The antenna system of claim 1 further comprising:

a flexible tube extending over the energy transmission member and the choke member, wherein the delivery path for the fluid is between the flexible tube and the energy transmission member; and

a sheath extending over the flexible tube, the sheath forming a return path for the fluid dispensed from a distal end of the flexible tube.

3. The antenna system of claim 1 , wherein the antenna system is configured such that the fluid flows through the choke member.

4. The antenna system of claim 1 , wherein the choke body is concentric with the energy transmission member.

5. The antenna system of claim 1 , wherein the choke body is a tubular member.

6. The antenna system of claim 1 , wherein the energy transmission member includes an inner conductor, an outer conductor, and a dielectric layer between the inner conductor and the outer conductor.

7. The antenna system of claim 6 , wherein the outer conductor includes a first outer conductor layer and a second outer conductor layer braided over the first outer conductor layer.

8. The antenna system of claim 6 , wherein the continuous wire mesh comprises a first braided layer, wherein the first braided layer is braided over the outer conductor.

9. The antenna system of claim 8 , wherein the first braided layer comprises a first portion braided directly over the outer conductor and a second portion spaced from the outer conductor, wherein the second portion forms the choke body.

10. The antenna system of claim 9 , wherein the first braided layer further comprises a third portion between the first portion and the second portion, wherein the third portion forms the choke connector.

11. The antenna system of claim 9 , wherein the continuous wire mesh further comprises a second braided layer, wherein the second braided layer is formed over the first braided layer.

12. The antenna system of claim 11 , wherein the first braided layer is formed in a first axial direction and the second braided layer is formed over the first braided layer in a second axial direction, wherein the second axial direction is opposite to the first axial direction.

13. The antenna system of claim 1 , wherein the choke member forms a cup-shape around the energy transmission member.

14. The antenna system of claim 1 , wherein a distal end of the choke member is sealed.

15. The antenna system of claim 1 further comprising a sealing layer over the continuous wire mesh.

16. The antenna system of claim 1 wherein the choke connector includes a set of radially arranged conductive pins extending between the energy transmission member and the choke member.

17. A method for delivering energy for ablation, the method comprising:

conducting the energy to an antenna body through an energy transmission member;

conducting the energy through a choke member coupled to the energy transmission member, the choke member including a choke body and a choke connector disposed between the choke body and the energy transmission member, the choke connector electrically coupling the choke body to the energy transmission member, the choke body defining an outermost portion of the choke member, wherein the choke member is formed from a continuous wire mesh; and

providing a fluid from a cooling system through the choke member such that the choke connector is in direct contact with the fluid in a fluid path between the choke connector and the energy transmission member.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the fluid flows through the choke member by flowing through the choke body and the choke connector in a distal direction.

19. The method of claim 17 further comprising returning the fluid to the cooling system through a sheath extending over the energy transmission member.

20. The method of claim 17 further comprising discharging the fluid through a port in a sheath extending over the energy transmission member.
