Abstract

Systems and methods of repositioning teeth, using one or more appliances for installing on a patient's teeth are described. The appliance includes an arch shaped member; a plurality of spring members coupled to or provided on the arch shaped member; and a plurality of securing members for securing to a corresponding plurality of the patient's teeth on a one-to-one basis, the securing members being supported by the arch shaped member. The arch shaped member and the plurality of springs, together, comprise a two dimensional structure having a length dimension and a width dimension with varying widths along the length dimension, that is bent into a three dimensional structure.

Claims (40)

1. An orthodontic appliance, comprising:

an arch shaped member configured to be disposed behind and along a patient's teeth; and

a plurality of arms extending from the arch shaped member, each of the arms including (i) a first end portion extending from the arch shaped member, (ii) a free second end portion, (iii) a connector portion configured to be coupled to one of the teeth, and (iv) a spring portion configured to apply a biasing force to at least one of the teeth, the spring portion disposed along the arm between the first end portion and the connector portion,

wherein the arch shaped member and at least some of the arms comprise a three-dimensional unitarily-formed structure.

The appliance of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of securing members, wherein each of the securing members is configured to be disposed on one of the teeth, and wherein the connector portion of each of the arms is configured to be coupled to one of the teeth via a corresponding one of the securing members.

3. The appliance of claim 1 , wherein the spring portion comprises nitinol.

4. The appliance of claim 1 , wherein the arms comprise:

a first arm including a first spring portion having a first shape, and

a second arm including a second spring portion having a second shape different from the first shape.

5. The appliance of claim 1 , wherein the arms comprise:

a first arm including a first spring portion having a first thickness, and

a second arm including a second spring portion having a second thickness different from the first thickness.

6. The appliance of claim 1 , wherein the arms comprise:

a first arm including a first length, and

a second arm including a second length different from the first length.

7. The appliance of claim 1 , wherein the connector portion is disposed at the free second end portion.

8. The appliance of claim 1 , wherein the spring portion has a serpentine shape.

9. The appliance of claim 1 , wherein the spring portion is positioned between the arch shaped member and the corresponding connector portion along a longitudinal axis of the respective arm, and wherein the spring portion includes a first portion and a second portion distal to the first portion along the longitudinal axis, the first portion extending in a first direction and the second portion extending in a second direction substantially opposite the first direction.

10. An orthodontic appliance for repositioning a patient's teeth, the appliance comprising:

an arch shaped member configured to extend along the patient's teeth; and

a plurality of arms protruding from the arch shaped member, each of the arms including-

a spring portion configured to apply a biasing force to one of the teeth, and

a connector portion distal to the spring portion, wherein the connector portion is configured to be coupled to the one of the teeth,

wherein the arch shaped member and at least some of the arms comprise asp unitarily-formed structure.

11. The appliance of claim 10 , wherein the arch shaped member and the portion of the arms comprise substantially the same thickness.

12. The appliance of claim 10 , wherein the unitarily-formed structure comprises a heat-treated structure configured to retain a predetermined three-dimensional shape.

13. The appliance of claim 10 , wherein each of the arms further comprises a longitudinal portion between the spring portion and the connector portion, the longitudinal portion being substantially straight and the spring portion being bent.

14. The appliance of claim 10 , wherein the connector portion includes a T-shaped connector element.

15. The appliance of claim 10 , wherein one or more of the arms comprise a shape memory material.

16. The appliance of claim 10 , wherein one or more of the arms comprise nitinol.

17. The appliance of claim 10 , wherein the connector portion is configured to be coupled to one of the teeth via a corresponding securing member disposed on the teeth.

The appliance of claim 10 , wherein the spring portion is positioned between the arch shaped member and the corresponding connector portion along a longitudinal axis of the respective arm, and wherein the spring portion includes a first portion and a second portion distal to the first portion along the longitudinal axis, the first portion extending in a first direction and the second portion extending in a second direction substantially opposite the first direction.

19. An orthodontic appliance, the appliance comprising:

an elongate member configured to extend along a backside of a patient's teeth; and

a plurality of arms cantilevered from and spaced apart along the elongate member, each of the arms including-

a first portion configured to be coupled to a corresponding one of the teeth,

a second portion proximal of the first portion along the respective one of the arms,

wherein the second portion is resiliently flexible such that, when the first portion is coupled to the corresponding one of the teeth, the second portion is configured to move from a loaded state toward an unloaded state, thereby repositioning the corresponding one of the teeth from an original position toward a desired final position, and

wherein the elongate member and at least some of the arms comprise a unitarily-formed structure.

20. The appliance of claim 19 , wherein the second portion has a serpentine shape.
