Abstract

A tensioning system for a conveyor element of a conveyor. The tensioning system including a hydraulic apparatus, a locking plate, and a take-up bar. The hydraulic apparatus includes a cylinder having an extendible piston. The take-up bar is coupled to the cylinder and coupled to a shaft of the conveyor. The take-up bar moves the shaft of the conveyor in a forward direction away from the centerline of the conveyor when overcoming a locking force from the locking plate.

Claims (47)

1. A tensioning system for a conveyor element of a conveyor, the tensioning system comprising:

a hydraulic apparatus including a cylinder having an extendible piston;

a locking plate including a biasing spring and a locking member having a plurality of ratchet grooves, the biasing spring biasing the locking member and the plurality of ratchet grooves towards the take-up bar; and

a take-up bar coupled to the cylinder and coupled to a shaft of the conveyor, the take-up bar including a plurality of teeth extending along a length of the take-up bar and configured to engage with the ratchet grooves of the locking member, wherein the take-up bar moves the shaft of the conveyor in a forward direction away from the centerline of the conveyor when overcoming a locking force from the locking plate, the locking force resulting from the biasing spring causing the plurality of ratchet grooves to engage the plurality of teeth.

2. The tensioning system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a mode selector switchable between a first state, in which a valve of the hydraulic apparatus is operated in response to an output signal from a sensor, and a second state, in which the valve is operated in response to an actuation of an actuator.

3. The tensioning system of claim 2 , wherein the output signal from the sensor indicates whether a conveyor element driven by the shaft is within a predetermined distance from the sensor, such that the output signal is indicative of when the conveyor element is under-tensioned.

4. The tensioning system of claim 1 , further comprising a manual valve coupled to a pump and the cylinder of the hydraulic apparatus, the manual valve configured to allow the pump to drive the cylinder when valve of the hydraulic apparatus malfunctions.

5. The tensioning system of claim 4 , wherein the manual valve is configured to drive the cylinder in a reverse direction toward the centerline of the conveyor.

6. The tensioning system of claim 1 , wherein the locking plate is biased to a lock position by the biasing spring.

7. The tensioning system of claim 1 , wherein a first portion of a ratcheting mechanism of the take-up bar is longer than a second portion of the ratcheting mechanism of the locking plate.

8. The tensioning system of claim 1 , further comprising

a proximity sensor configured to generate an output signal indicative of the conveyor element being under-tensioned when the conveyor element enters a detection range of the proximity sensor; and

an electronic processor coupled to the proximity sensor and the hydraulic apparatus, the electronic processor configured to

receive the output signal from the proximity sensor;

activate a valve of the hydraulic apparatus to be in an open state in response to receiving the output signal.

9. The tensioning system of claim 8 , wherein the proximity sensor is a first proximity sensor and the output signal is a first output signal, and further comprising a second proximity sensor, wherein the solenoid-controlled valve is operated based on the first output signal from the first proximity sensor and a second output signal from the second proximity sensor.

10. The tensioning system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of ratchet grooves are regularly spaced on a first side of the locking member that faces the take-up bar, and wherein the plurality of teeth are regularly spaced on a first side of the take-up bar that faces the locking member.

11. A tensioning system for a conveyor element of a conveyor, the tensioning system comprising:

a hydraulic apparatus including a cylinder having an extendible piston;

a locking plate;

a take-up bar coupled to the cylinder and coupled to a shaft of the conveyor, wherein the take-up bar moves the shaft of the conveyor in a forward direction away from the centerline of the conveyor when overcoming a locking force from the locking plate; and

a mode selector switchable between a first state, in which a valve of the hydraulic apparatus is operated in response to an output signal from a sensor, and a second state, in which the valve is operated in response to an actuation of an actuator.

12. The tensioning system of claim 11 , wherein the output signal from the sensor indicates whether a conveyor element driven by the shaft is within a predetermined distance from the sensor, such that the output signal is indicative of when the conveyor element is under-tensioned.

13. The tensioning system of claim 11 , wherein the sensor is a first sensor and the output signal is a first output signal, and further comprising a second sensor, wherein the valve is operated based on the first output signal from the first sensor and a second output signal from the second sensor.

14. The tensioning system of claim 11 , further comprising an electronic processor coupled to the valve and wherein the electronic processor is configured to place the valve in the open state for a predetermined period of time in response to the actuation of the actuator.

15. The tensioning system of claim 11 , further comprising an electronic processor coupled to the valve and wherein the electronic processor is configured to place the valve in the open state for a predetermined period of time in response to the output signal from the sensor.

16. A tensioning system for a conveyor element of a conveyor, the tensioning system comprising:

a hydraulic apparatus including a cylinder having an extendible piston;

a locking plate;

a take-up bar coupled to the cylinder and coupled to a shaft of the conveyor, wherein the take-up bar moves the shaft of the conveyor in a forward direction away from the centerline of the conveyor when overcoming a locking force from the locking plate; and

a manual valve coupled to a pump and the cylinder of the hydraulic apparatus, the manual valve configured to allow the pump to drive the cylinder when valve of the hydraulic apparatus malfunctions.
