Abstract

An engagement time computer system for serving online content based on user engagement duration includes an output device, at least one memory, and one or more processors. The processors are configured to determine a historical engagement time of an online user and to identify a plurality of online content items. Each online content item of the plurality of online content items has a target engagement time. The processors are further configured to receive a request for a content item. The request is associated with the online user. The processors are also configured to select a first online content item from the plurality of online content items based at least in part on the historical engagement time of the online user and the target engagement time of the first online content item and to transmit the first online content item for display to the online user.

Claims (37)

1. A system, comprising:

one or more processors; and

one or more memory devices storing computer-readable instructions that, when implemented, cause the one or more processors to perform operations, the operations comprising:

receiving, from an access device comprising an audio codec, a request for an additional content item, the request for the additional content item being generated at least in part based on a first request for a first content item, the first request being determined at least in part using digitized audible information from a user;

selecting the additional content item from a plurality of additional content items, wherein the selecting comprises:

determining, based on consumption data associated with the user and the plurality of additional content items, a historical engagement time for the user; and

comparing the historical engagement time for the user with one or more target engagement times associated with the plurality of additional content items, wherein the one or more target engagement times are shorter than one or more durations respectively associated with the plurality of additional content items; and

providing, to the access device, the additional content item for presentation with the first content item via an audio output of the access device.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein selecting the additional content item is based at least in part on a target engagement time associated with the additional content item being less than the historical engagement time for the user.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein a target engagement time associated with the additional content item corresponds to a key messaging point of the additional content item.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the historical engagement time for the user is determined at least in part based on a content type category associated with the first content item.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the access device comprises a head-mounted display.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the additional content item is related to the first content item.

7. The system of claim 4 , wherein the content type category comprises a sport or a product type.

8. The system of claim 4 , wherein the content type category is arranged in a hierarchy of content type categories, and wherein the historical engagement time is associated with a nearest available ancestor or descendent of the content type category.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein a parameter of a transaction record associated with providing the additional content item is determined based at least in part on the target engagement time.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein a parameter of a transaction record associated with providing the additional content item is determined based at least in part on a user interacting with the additional content item on the access device for the target engagement time.

11. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

receiving, by a computing system comprising one or more processors, and from an access device comprising an audio codec, a request for an additional content item, the request for the additional content item being generated at least in part based on a first request for a first content item, the first request being determined at least in part using digitized audible information from a user;

selecting, by the computing system, the additional content item from a plurality of additional content items, wherein the selecting comprises:

determining, by the computing system and based on consumption data associated with the user and the plurality of additional content items, a historical engagement time for the user; and

comparing, by the computing system, the historical engagement time for the user with one or more target engagement times associated with the plurality of additional content items, wherein the one or more target engagement times are shorter than one or more durations respectively associated with the plurality of additional content items; and

providing, by the computing system, the additional content item for presentation with the first content item via an audio output of the access device.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein selecting the additional content item is based at least in part on a target engagement time associated with the additional content item being less than the historical engagement time for the user.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein a target engagement time associated with the additional content item corresponds to a key messaging point of the additional content item.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the historical engagement time for the user is determined at least in part based on a content type category associated with the first content item.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the access device comprises a head-mounted display.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the additional content item is related to the first content item.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the content type category comprises a sport or a product type.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the content type category is arranged in a hierarchy of content type categories, and wherein the historical engagement time is associated with a nearest available ancestor or descendent of the content type category.

19. A memory device storing computer-readable instructions that are executable to cause one or more processors to perform operations, the operations comprising:

receiving, from an access device comprising an audio codec, a request for an additional content item, the request for the additional content item being generated at least in part based on a first request for a first content item, the first request being determined at least in part using digitized audible information from a user;

selecting the additional content item from a plurality of additional content items, wherein the selecting comprises:

determining, based on consumption data associated with the user and the plurality of additional content items, a historical engagement time for the user; and

comparing the historical engagement time for the user with one or more target engagement times associated with the plurality of additional content items, wherein the one or more target engagement times are shorter than one or more durations respectively associated with the plurality of additional content items; and

providing, to the access device, the additional content item for presentation with the first content item via an audio output of the access device.

20. The memory device of claim 19 , wherein selecting the additional content item is based at least in part on a target engagement time associated with the additional content item being less than the historical engagement time for the user.
