Abstract

Methods of separating a multiphase mixture are provided. The multiphase flow can include petrochemicals. The multiphase flow is flowed through a vane assembly having a plurality of curved passages. The multiphase mixture is gradually decelerated such that it collides with surfaces of the vane assembly at relatively oblique angles and at lower relative speeds. Such a configuration can reduce droplet breakup which, in turn, can preserve larger droplet sizes that are more likely to settle to a liquid bed below the inlet diverter due to gravity.

Claims (37)

1. An inlet diverter for separating a multiphase mixture, the inlet diverter comprising:

first and second plates;

first and second diverter plates positioned between the first and second plates and perpendicular thereto, the first and second diverter plates defining with the first and second plates an inlet;

a vane grouping having a top portion coupled to the first plate and a bottom portion coupled to the second plate, the vane grouping comprising:

a plurality of first vanes having a leading portion extending outwardly in a first direction at a leading edge generally towards the inlet and being disposed between the first and second plates and the first and second diverter plates, a trailing portion extending outwardly in the first direction at a trailing edge, and a curved portion between the leading portion and the trailing portion, and

a plurality of second vanes having a leading portion extending outwardly in the first direction at a leading edge generally towards the inlet and being disposed between the first and second plates and the first and second diverter plates, a trailing portion extending outwardly in the first direction at a trailing edge, and a curved portion between the leading portion and the trailing portion.

2. The inlet diverter according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of first vanes and second vanes are positioned in a nested arrangement.

3. The inlet diverter according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of second vanes is a mirror image of the plurality of first vanes.

4. The inlet diverter according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of first and second vanes comprise passages separating adjacent vanes.

5. The inlet diverter of claim 4 , wherein at least one of the passages between adjacent vanes expands in width along the passage.

6. The inlet diverter of claim 1 , wherein each vane of the plurality of vanes is spaced apart from an adjacent vane by an offset distance.

7. The inlet diverter of claim 6 , wherein the offset distance increases or is substantially the same from the leading portion towards the trailing portion.

8. The inlet diverter of claim 7 , wherein the offset distance at adjacent leading portions of adjacent vanes is between 0.75 inches and about 2.6 inches and the offset distance at adjacent trailing portions of adjacent vanes is between about 0.75 inches and about 2.6 inches.

9. The assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the second plate of the inlet diverter includes a plurality of apertures that extend along and curve with respective flow paths defined by the plurality of vanes for entrained particulates to fall through during operation.

10. An inlet diverter for separating a multiphase mixture, the inlet diverter comprising:

first and second plates each including a plurality of apertures;

first and second diverter plates defining with the first and second plates an inlet, the first and second diverter plates each comprising a plurality of projections along respective top and bottom portions thereof that matingly fit within respective ones of the plurality of apertures;

a vane grouping having a top portion coupled to the first plate and a bottom portion coupled to the second plate, the vane grouping comprising:

a plurality of first vanes having a leading portion extending outwardly in a first direction at a leading edge generally towards the inlet and being disposed between the first and second plates and the first and second diverter plates, a trailing portion extending outwardly in the first direction at a trailing edge, and a curved portion between the leading portion and the trailing portion, and

a plurality of second vanes having a leading portion extending outwardly in the first direction at a leading edge generally towards the inlet and being disposed between the first and second plates and the first and second diverter plates, a trailing portion extending outwardly in the first direction at a trailing edge, and a curved portion between the leading portion and the trailing portion.

11. The assembly according to claim 10 , wherein the second plate further includes a second plurality of apertures that extend along and curve with respective flow paths defined by the plurality of vanes for entrained particulates to fall through during operation.

12. The inlet diverter of claim 10 , wherein the vane grouping further comprises:

a plurality of first vanes having a leading portion extending outwardly in a first direction at a leading edge generally towards the inlet and being disposed between the first and second plates and the first and second diverter plates, a trailing portion extending outwardly in a second direction at a trailing edge generally towards the inlet, and a curved portion between the leading portion and the trailing portion, and

a plurality of second vanes having a leading portion extending outwardly in the first direction at a leading edge generally towards the inlet and being disposed between the first and second plates and the first and second diverter plates, a trailing portion extending outwardly in a third direction at a trailing edge generally towards the inlet, and a curved portion between the leading portion and the trailing portion.

13. The inlet diverter of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of vanes are positioned in a nested arrangement.

14. The inlet diverter of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of second vanes is a mirror image of the plurality of first vanes.

15. The inlet diverter according to claim 12 , wherein the plurality of first and second vanes comprise passages separating adjacent vanes.

16. The inlet diverter of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the passages between adjacent vanes expands in width along the passage.

17. The inlet diverter of claim 12 , wherein each vane of the plurality of vanes is spaced apart from an adjacent vane by an offset distance.

18. The inlet diverter of claim 17 , wherein the offset distance increases or is substantially the same from the leading portion towards the trailing portion.

19. An inlet diverter for separating a multiphase mixture, the inlet diverter comprising:

first and second plates;

first and second diverter plates positioned between the first and second plates and perpendicular thereto, the first and second diverter plates defining with the first and second plates an inlet;

a vane grouping having a top portion coupled to the first plate and a bottom portion coupled to the second plate, the vane grouping comprising:

a plurality of first vanes having a leading portion positioned between inner surfaces of the diverter plates and extending outwardly in a first direction parallel to the diverter plates, a trailing portion extending outwardly in the first direction, and a curved portion between the leading and trailing portions that curves 180°, and
