Abstract

A hydroponic growing system is presented. The system can include multiple growing trays in a vertical arrangement, where a pump supplies the top-most tray and each lower tray is supplied by the overlying tray, and where the plumbing elements for supply and drainage are arranged to one side of the system. The system includes variations to support different crop types within the same system, including removable growing structures for root vegetable, microgreens and supports for vining crops. The system can monitor and adjust the nutrients and other features of the systems water profile to concurrently group multiple crops in differing developing stages.

Claims (19)

1. A plant holder for a hydroponic system, comprising:

a tray lid having one or more openings and configured to fit over a tray for a hydroponic system;

a net cup configured to fit into one of the openings of the tray lid and to hold a plant in a soilless growth medium, the net cup having an upper edge with a lip running horizontally around the net cup configured to lap over the tray lid to suspend the net cup in an opening of the tray lid into which the net cup is inserted, the lip including a set of horizontal grooves extending horizontally along opposing outer sides of the lip; and

a plant support connectable to the net cup, including:

a vertical support configured to support a plant growing in the net cup, including a first rod, a second rod, and one or more cross-bars each connected between the first rod and the second rod, and

a horizontal connector configured to attach the vertical support to the net cup, including a first horizontal connector foot connected to the first rod and a second horizontal connector foot connected to the second rod and extending horizontally parallel to the first horizontal connector foot, the first horizontal connector foot and the second horizontal connector foot spaced to fit horizontally into the set of grooves and apply inward pressure to the outer sides of the lip to hold the vertical support in a vertical position.

2. The plant holder of claim 1 , wherein a separation between the first rod and the second rod is smaller than a separation between the first horizontal connector foot and the second horizontal connector foot.

3. The plant holder of claim 1 , wherein the net cup further includes:

a set of tabs configured to hold net cup in the tray lid and to be pinched for removal of the net cup from the tray lid.

4. The plant holder of claim 1 , wherein the first rod, second rod, first horizontal connector foot, second horizontal connector foot, and a first of the one or more cross-bars are formed of a single element.

5. The plant holder of claim 1 , wherein the plant support is formed of wire.

6. The plant holder of claim 1 , wherein the plant support is formed of stainless steel.

7. The plant holder of claim 1 , wherein the plant support is formed of cold rolled steel.

8. The plant holder of claim 1 , wherein the net cup is formed of injection molded acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS).

9. The plant holder of claim 1 , wherein the grooves are shaped as circular arcs configured to hold the first horizontal connector foot and the second horizontal connector foot between the lip and the tray lid along opposing outer sides of the net cup.

10. The plant holder of claim 1 , wherein the grooves are semi-circular recesses in the lip along opposing outer sides of the net cup.

11. The plant holder of claim 1 , wherein the net cup is injection molded plastic.

12. The plant holder of claim 1 , wherein the tray lid is molded plastic.

13. The plant holder of claim 12 , wherein the molded plastic is thermoformed high impact polystyrene.
