Abstract

A method for testing an updated version of an existing software application. The method may comprise analyzing a user interface screen of the updated version of the existing software application to identify previously existing controls and updated controls and automatically capturing, via a capture engine, each of the updated controls present on the user interface screen of the updated version, wherein the automatic capturing is initiated by a user selecting a learn screen function. The method may further comprise automatically associating, via a rules base, control descriptions with each of the automatically captured updated controls and one or more testing actions with each of the updated controls, thereby generating a plurality of test steps each comprising one of the updated controls, a particular associated control description, and a particular testing action. The method may then comprise generating an updated test component comprised of the plurality of test steps.

Claims (16)

1. A method for evaluating a version of a software application, the method comprising:

analyzing a user interface screen of the software application to identify existing controls and updated controls;

capturing, via a capture engine, each of the updated controls present on the user interface screen of the software application, wherein the capturing is initiated by a user selecting a learn screen function;

associating, via a rules base:

control descriptions with each of the updated controls; and

one or more testing actions

with each of the updated controls, thereby generating a plurality of test steps each comprising one of the updated controls, an associated control description, and a testing action; and

generating an updated test component comprised of the plurality of test steps.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

automatically displaying one or more of the plurality of test steps in a component editor interface.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein a plurality of updated controls is associated with a particular location on the user interface screen, and wherein the method further comprises:

displaying a multi-component selection window to a user, which allows the user to select from a plurality of potential test components, each of the plurality of test components being associated with one of the plurality of updated controls associated with the particular location on the user interface screen.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein a user selects the rules base.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the component editor interface allows a user to change one or more of the plurality of test steps.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the component editor interface allows the user to change a control description associated with one or more of the plurality of test steps.

7. The method of claim 3 , wherein the multi-component selection window is configured to allow a user to select one, some, or all of the plurality of potential components to include in the updated test component.
