Abstract

A conical radiator coupled to an antenna patch disposed along a first end of the radiator, said patch disposed on an insulator. A ground plane is connected to the insulator and a radome is disposed opposite a second end of the radiator. The radome has a first region presenting a convex surface towards the radiator, and a second region presenting a concave surface towards the radiator. The first end of the conical radiator is the apex of the cone. A ground plane is included and a portion of the ground plane is a planar surface and another portion extends away from the planar portion towards the radome. Also disclosed is a method for forming a radiation pattern by shaping the radome to effectuate a predetermined radiation pattern using localized convex and concave surfaces positioned on the radome at different points in relation to the conical radiator.

Claims (34)

1. A method comprising:

radiating a signal by a radiating structure, wherein the radiating structure radiates the signal based on a first radiation pattern of the radiating structure; and

reflecting a portion of the radiated signal by a radome to form a second radiation pattern,

wherein the second radiation pattern is in a same radiation plane as the first radiation pattern and the same radiation plane is parallel to the radiating structure, wherein the second radiation pattern is angularly broader than the first radiation pattern.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the radiating is performed by a radiating structure that is substantially conical.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein an apex of the radiating structure is disposed near a ground plane, said method further comprising reflecting at least a portion of the radiated signal by the ground plane in a direction towards the radome.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the radome include a substantially concave portion, said concave portion disposed towards the radiating structure.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the radiating structure includes a plurality of radiators disposed in a linear array, and wherein the method further comprises radiating a signal by each radiator of the plurality of radiators.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the radiating structure includes a plurality of radiators disposed in a two-dimensional array, and wherein the method further comprises radiating a signal by each radiator of the plurality of radiators.

7. A radiating device comprising:

a radiator configured to emit electromagnetic radiation having a first radiation pattern;

a radome, positioned where at least a portion of the electromagnetic radiation passes through the radome,

wherein the radome is configured to reflect a portion of the electromagnetic radiation to form a second radiation pattern that is in a same radiation plane as the first radiation pattern and the same radiation plane is parallel to the radiator, wherein the second radiation pattern is angularly broader than the first radiation pattern.

8. The radiating device of claim 7 , wherein the radiating structure is substantially conical.

9. The radiating device of claim 7 , wherein the radome is formed of a plastic.

10. The radiating device of claim 9 , wherein the plastic comprises at least one region doped with a ferrous material.

11. The radiating device of claim 10 , wherein the at least one region is located around a peak region of the radome.

12. The radiating device of claim 10 , wherein the at least one region is located around a valley region of the radome.

13. The radiating device of claim 7 , wherein the radome comprises three peaks and two valleys, wherein a center peak is disposed above a vertex of the radiator.

14. The radiating device of claim 7 , wherein the radome comprises two peaks and a valley, wherein the valley is disposed above a vertex of the radiator.

15. The radiating device of claim 7 , further comprising a plurality of radiators disposed in a linear array, each of the plurality configured to emit electromagnetic radiation having the first radiation pattern.

16. The radiating device of claim 7 , further comprising a plurality of radiators disposed in a two-dimensional array, each of the plurality configured to emit electromagnetic radiation having the first radiation pattern.

17. A radiating device comprising:

a radiator configured to emit electromagnetic radiation having a radiation pattern;

a radome, positioned where at least a portion of the electromagnetic radiation passes through the radome,

wherein the radome is configured to alter a first radiation pattern, and

wherein the radome comprises two peaks and a valley, wherein the valley is disposed above a vertex of the radiator.

18. The radiating device of claim 17 , wherein the radome is formed of a plastic comprising at least one region doped with a ferrous material.

19. The radiating device of claim 17 , further comprising a plurality of radiators disposed in an array, each of the plurality configured to emit electromagnetic radiation having the radiation pattern.

20. A radiating device comprising:

a radiator configured to emit electromagnetic radiation having a radiation pattern;

a radome, positioned where at least a portion of the electromagnetic radiation passes through the radome,

wherein the radome is configured to alter a first radiation pattern, and

wherein the radome comprises three peaks and two valleys, wherein a center peak is disposed above a vertex of the radiator.
