Abstract

An aircraft landing gear comprising: a shock-absorbing main leg having a sprung part for attachment to an aircraft and an un-sprung part including a slider and an axle carrying at least one wheel, the wheel having a toothed ring gear; a drive transmission mounted externally on the sprung part, or on the un-sprung part, of the main leg, the drive transmission having at least one motor and a drive pinion for meshing with the toothed ring of the wheel; and an actuator for lifting the drive transmission into and out of driving engagement with the toothed ring and for maintaining the driving engagement as the landing gear deflects during a ground taxiing operation. Also, a method of operating the aircraft landing gear.

Claims (43)

1. An aircraft landing gear comprising:

a shock-absorbing main leg having a sprung part for attachment to an aircraft and an unsprung part including an axle carrying at least one wheel having a wheel hub;

a drive transmission mounted externally on the sprung part, or on the un-sprung part, of the main leg, the drive transmission having at least one motor and a drive pinion for operably directly engaging with the wheel hub; and

an actuator for lifting the drive transmission into and out of driving engagement with the wheel hub and for maintaining the driving engagement as the landing gear deflects during a ground taxiing operation.

2. The aircraft landing gear according to claim 1 , wherein the drive transmission is detachably mounted.

3. The aircraft landing gear according to claim 1 , further comprising an articulating mechanism pivotally mounted on the sprung part, or on the un-sprung part, of the main leg, wherein the articulating mechanism is connected to the actuator and supports the drive transmission.

4. The aircraft landing gear according to claim 3 , wherein the articulating mechanism pivot axis is configured to tilt relative to the main leg.

5. The aircraft landing gear according to claim 1 , wherein the drive pinion includes a constant-velocity joint.

6. The aircraft landing gear according to claim 5 , wherein the drive transmission includes two motors and two drive pinions, each one of the two motors is for driving a respective one of the two drive pinions.

7. The aircraft landing gear according to claim 1 , wherein the drive transmission includes two drive pinions, and a differential drive connected between the at least one motor and the two drive pinions.

8. The aircraft landing gear according to claim 1 , wherein the drive transmission is mounted externally on the sprung part of the main leg, and the actuator is configured to maintain the driving engagement between the drive pinion and the wheel hub as the sprung and un-sprung parts of the main leg move relative to one another during the ground taxiing operation.

9. An aircraft landing gear, comprising:

an axle carrying at least one wheel having a wheel hub;

a drive transmission having at least one motor and a drive pinion for operably directly engaging with the wheel hub;

an actuator for lifting the drive transmission into and out of driving engagement with the wheel hub;

wherein the actuator is arranged to maintain the driving engagement between the pinion and the wheel hub as the landing gear deflects during a ground taxiing operation;

an articulating mechanism pivotally mounted on a main leg, wherein the articulating mechanism is connected to the actuator at a first point and supports the drive transmission at a second opposing point; and,

wherein the actuator is pivotally received in a first bracket mounted on the main leg above a pivotal mounting point between the first and second points of the articulating mechanism on the main leg.

10. An aircraft landing gear, comprising:

an axle carrying at least one wheel having a wheel hub;

a drive transmission having at least one motor and a drive pinion for operably directly engaging with the wheel hub;

an actuator for lifting the drive transmission into and out of driving engagement with the wheel hub;

wherein the actuator is arranged to maintain the driving engagement between the pinion and the wheel hub as the landing gear deflects during a ground taxiing operation;

an articulating mechanism pivotally mounted on a main leg, wherein the articulating mechanism is connected to the actuator and supports the drive transmission;

wherein the actuator is pivotally received in a first bracket mounted on the main leg above a pivotal mounting point of the articulating mechanism on the main leg; and,

wherein the articulating mechanism includes an elbow crank, the pivotal mounting point being pivotally received in a second bracket mounted on a sprung part of the main leg and wherein the actuator is pivotally received in the first bracket mounted on the sprung part of the main leg above the pivotal mounting point of the elbow crank.

11. The aircraft according to claim 10 , wherein the first and the second brackets are clevis brackets.

12. The aircraft landing gear according to claim 10 , wherein the drive transmission complies with at least one of the following:

(a) the drive transmission is positioned externally on the sprung part of the main leg;

(b) the drive transmission is positioned externally on the main leg;

(c) the drive transmission is detachable mounted;

(d) the drive transmission is pivotally positioned on the main leg; and

(e) the drive transmission is mounted externally on an un-sprung part of the main leg.

13. The aircraft landing gear according to claim 10 , wherein the pivotal mounting point further comprises a pivot axis, and wherein the pivot axis is configured to tilt relative to the main leg.

14. The aircraft landing gear according to claim 10 , wherein the main leg is a shock-absorbing main leg including the sprung part for attachment to an aircraft and an un-sprung part including the axle.

15. An aircraft landing gear comprising:

a shock-absorbing main leg having a sprung part for attachment to an aircraft and an unsprung part including an axle carrying at least one wheel having a tire mounted to a wheel hub;

a drive transmission mounted externally on the sprung part, or on the un-sprung part, of the main leg, the drive transmission having at least one motor and a drive pinion for operably engaging with the wheel hub away from the tire along the axle; and

an actuator for lifting the drive transmission into and out of driving engagement with the wheel hub and for maintaining the driving engagement as the landing gear deflects during a ground taxiing operation.

16. An aircraft landing gear comprising:
