Abstract

Devices, systems, and methods used to seal a treatment area to prevent embolic agents from migrating are described. The concept has particular benefit in allowing liquid embolic to be used with a variety of intravascular therapeutic applications, including for occluding aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations in the neurovasculature.

Claims (30)

1. A method of treating a neurovascular arteriovenous malformation comprising:

providing a catheter with a mesh catch structure on a distal portion of the catheter;

tracking the catheter through a vascular system to a location near the arteriovenous malformation;

delivering a liquid embolic agent in a liquid embolic solution to the location near the arteriovenous malformation; and,

preventing passage of the liquid embolic agent through the mesh catch structure while allowing passage of the liquid embolic solution through the catch structure.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the catheter includes a hub configured to attach to a syringe containing the liquid embolic agent and the liquid embolic solution.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tracking the catheter through a vascular system to a location near the arteriovenous malformation further comprises tracking the catheter through a venous system to a location on the venous side of the arteriovenous malformation.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mesh catch structure has pores that are sized from about 50 to about 250 microns.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mesh catch structure has pores that are sized from about 100 to about 200 microns.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mesh catch structure has pores that are sized from about 100 to about 150 microns.

7. A method of treating a neurovascular arteriovenous malformation comprising:

tracking a guide catheter through a vascular system;

tracking a microcatheter with an attached distal mesh catch structure through the guide catheter and to a side of the arteriovenous malformation;

delivering a liquid embolic agent and a liquid embolic solution through the microcatheter and into the arteriovenous malformation, where the microcatheter distal mesh catch structure catches any displaced liquid embolic agent while allowing passage of the liquid embolic solution.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the liquid embolic solution is dimethyl sulfoxide.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein a distal portion of the mesh catch structure has a higher porosity than a more proximal portion of the mesh catch structure.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the mesh catch structure comprises two layers.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the mesh catch structure adopts a first inverted configuration when sheathed in the guide catheter and a second unfurled configuration when released from the guide catheter.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the mesh catch structure is detachable from the microcatheter.

13. The method of claim 7 , further comprising navigating the microcatheter through a draining vein of the neurovascular arteriovenous malformation.

14. A method of treating a neurovascular arteriovenous malformation comprising:

tracking a first catheter to an arterial side of an arteriovenous malformation, the first catheter configured to deliver a liquid embolic agent and a liquid embolic solution;

tracking a second catheter to a venous side of an arteriovenous malformation, the second catheter having an attached distal mesh catch structure with pores sized to allow the passage of the liquid embolic solution but not allow the passage of the liquid embolic agent; and,

delivering the liquid embolic agent and liquid embolic solution from the arterial side of the arteriovenous malformation through the first catheter.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising tracking the first catheter through a feeder vessel of the neurovascular arteriovenous malformation.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein a distal portion of the mesh catch structure has a higher porosity than a more proximal portion of the mesh catch structure.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the mesh catch structure comprises two layers.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the mesh catch structure adopts a first inverted configuration when sheathed in a guide catheter and a second unfurled configuration when released from the guide catheter.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein the mesh catch structure is detachable from the second microcatheter.

20. The method of claim 14 , wherein the liquid embolic solution is dimethyl sulfoxide.
