Abstract

Methods, systems, and devices are disclosed for implementing switchable dispensing and/or delivery of scented substances. In one aspect, a device includes a cartridge structured to include one or more chambers containing one or more scented substances contained in a corresponding chamber, a housing structured to include a compartment to hold the cartridge, an opening to allow the scented substances to dispense to an outer environment from the device, and one or more transporting channels formed between the compartment and the opening, in which each of the one or more transporting channels is configured to accelerate a scented substance from the corresponding chamber to the opening, and an actuator switch arranged in a corresponding transporting channel and operable to move between an open position and a closed position based on an applied signal to selectively allow passage of the scented substance from the corresponding transporting path.

Claims (26)

1. A method for dispensing scents, comprising:

moving one or more scented substances through one or more corresponding transporting paths configured in a housing of a device from one or more corresponding chambers in a cartridge storing the scented substances, each scented substance including a gas, vapor or liquid;

actuating a latchable gate mechanism arranged in a transporting channel between a closed position that blocks the transporting channel and an open position that opens the transporting channel to selectively allow passage of a corresponding scented substance;

dispensing the selected scented substance from the device to an outer environment; and

dispensing a specific scented gas using a plurality of fluids including scent-generating liquids, solvents or oil based fluids contained in the corresponding chambers, the dispensing the specific scented gas including:

forming gas bubbles by providing air through the scent-generating liquids, solvents or oil based fluids in a highly porous material structured to include at least one of nanoscale or microscale wire structures, nanoscale or microscale ribbon structures, nanoscale or microscale structures with nanopores or micropores, nanoscale or microscale particles, or nanoscale or microscale capsules,

transporting the gas bubbles through a transporting channel of an array of nanoscale or microscale channels to induce microbubbles with increased overall surface area than that of the gas bubbles, and

collecting the microbubbles from the array of nanoscale or microscale channels to generate the specific scented gas.

2. The method as in claim 1 , wherein the latchable gate mechanism changes to and from the closed position and the open position based on a magnetic, piezoelectric, or thermal actuator switch.

3. The method as in claim 1 , wherein the actuating includes applying a pulsed signal to the latchable gate mechanism to cause the latchable gate mechanism to move from the closed position to the open position,

wherein the applying the pulsed signal is for a duration of or less than 1 second, and/or

wherein the pulsed signal includes at least one of a pulsed electrical signal including a voltage or a current or a pulsed magnetic field.

4. The method as in claim 3 , further comprising:

maintaining the latchable gate mechanism in the open position and the closed position without use of electrical power after the pulsed electrical current is applied,

wherein the applying the pulsed magnetic field includes gradually diminishing amplitude for demagnetization.

5. The method as in claim 1 , further comprising:

operating one or more microscale fans configured in at least some of the corresponding one or more transporting channels to accelerate flow of the scented substance.

6. The method as in claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to be one of a handheld device, a wearable device, or a fixed device attached to a building, vehicle, or furniture.

7. The method as in claim 1 , further comprising:

synchronizing the latchable gate mechanism to move at a predetermined time,

whereby the dispensing occurs using a timed release of the scented substance.

8. The method as in claim 1 , wherein the cartridge is configured as a disposable, re-fillable, or replaceable cartridge.

9. The method as in claim 1 , wherein the method does not include heating the scented substance to dispense the selected scented substance from the device.

10. The method as in claim 1 , wherein the actuating the latchable gate mechanism includes applying an electrical signal to an electrical circuit including an array of one or both of transistors and relay switches coupled to an array of the latchable gate mechanisms to selectively control application of the applied signal to one or more of the selected latchable gate mechanisms in the array.

11. The method as in claim 1 , wherein the air provided through the scent-generating liquids, solvents or oil based fluids includes cold air having a temperature below 20° C., warm air having a temperature of 20° C. to 40° C., or hot air having a temperature between 40° C. and 70° C.

12. The method as in claim 6 , wherein the outer environment includes a space around the head of the user wearing the wearable device.
