Abstract

Aspects of the present disclosure involve a system comprising a computer-readable storage medium storing a program and method for streaming audio between devices. The program and method provide for receiving, from a first device associated with a first user, an indication that audio output of the first device is via an external audio output device; providing the indication to a second device associated with a second user, the first user and the second user corresponding to contacts in a messaging application; receiving, from the second device and in response to the providing, audio input and a request to stream the audio input to the first device; and providing, to the first device, the audio input for streaming on the first device.

Claims (40)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, from a first device associated with a first user of a messaging application, an indication that audio output of the first device is via an external audio output device;

providing, in response to the receiving, the indication to a second device associated with a second user of the messaging application, to cause display of a graphical element within the messaging application on the second device, the graphical element being user-selectable to initiate audio streaming to the first device;

receiving, from the second device and in response to the providing, audio input and a request to stream the audio input in real time to the first device, the request corresponding to user selection of the graphical element by the second user;

providing, to the first device, the audio input for streaming in real time on the first device; and

causing, in a case where the messaging application is not running or not foregrounded on the first device, a notification to be displayed on a lock screen of the first device, to notify the first user of the audio input being streamed in real time from the messaging application on the second device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the audio input is for streaming on the first device via the external audio output device.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing the audio input as an audio file; and

providing, to the first device, a link to the audio file for display within a message thread on the first device, wherein user selection of the link provides for playback of the audio file on the first device.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that providing the audio input for streaming is authorized, based on a setting shared by the first user and the second user with respect to the messaging application.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the user selection corresponds to a press-and-hold gesture.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the external audio output device comprises at least one of headphones or earbuds.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the audio input corresponds to voice input provided by the second user at the second device.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the indication further causes the messaging application on the second device to display a second notification that the first user is wearing headphones.

9. A system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, configure the system to:

receive, from a first device associated with a first user of a messaging application, an indication that audio output of the first device is via an external audio output device;

provide, in response to the receiving, the indication to a second device associated with a second user, of the messaging application, to cause display of a graphical element within the messaging application on the second device, the graphical element being user-selectable to initiate audio streaming to the first device;

receive, from the second device and in response to the providing, audio input and a request to stream the audio input in real time to the first device, the request corresponding to user selection of the graphical element by the second user;

provide, to the first device, the audio input for streaming in real time on the first device; and

cause, in a case where the messaging application is not running or not foregrounded on the first device, a notification to be displayed on a lock screen of the first device, to notify the first user of the audio input being streamed in real time from the messaging application on the second device.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the audio input is for streaming on the first device via the external audio output device.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the instructions further configure the system to:

store the audio input as an audio file; and

provide, to the first device, a link to the audio file for display within a message thread on the first device, wherein user selection of the link provides for playback of the audio file on the first device.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the instructions further configure the system to:

determine that providing the audio input for streaming is authorized, based on a setting shared by the first user and the second user with respect to the messaging application.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the user selection corresponds to a press-and-hold gesture.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the external audio output device comprises at least one of headphones or earbuds.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the audio input corresponds to voice input provided by the second user at the second device.

16. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, the computer-readable storage medium including instructions that when executed by a computer, cause the computer to:

receive, from a first device associated with a first user of a messaging application, an indication that audio output of the first device is via an external audio output device;

provide, in response to the receiving, the indication to a second device associated with a second user, of the messaging application, to cause display of a graphical element within the messaging application on the second device, the graphical element being user-selectable to initiate audio streaming to the first device;

receive, from the second device and in response to the providing, audio input and a request to stream the audio input in real time to the first device, the request corresponding to user selection of the graphical element by the second user;

provide, to the first device, the audio input for streaming in real time on the first device; and

cause, in a case where the messaging application is not running or not foregrounded on the first device, a notification to be displayed on a lock screen of the first device, to notify the first user of the audio input being streamed in real time from the messaging application on the second device.

17. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the audio input is for streaming on the first device via the external audio output device.
