Abstract

In an induction system for use with an object processing system, a distribution system is disclosed for providing dissimilar objects into one of a plurality of receiving units. The distribution system includes a conveyor section that travels over a vacuum roller, and the plurality of receiving units arranged generally below the vacuum roller such that an object with a mass will fall toward one of the plurality of receiving units based on both the object's mass and a vacuum force applied to the object through the conveyor section.

Claims (36)

1. In an induction system for use with an object processing system, a distribution system for providing dissimilar objects into one of a plurality of receiving units, said distribution system comprising a conveyor section that travels over a vacuum roller, and the plurality of receiving units arranged generally below the vacuum roller such that an object with a mass (m) will fall toward one of the plurality of receiving units based on both the object's mass (m) and a vacuum force applied to the object through the conveyor section.

2. The distribution system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the conveyor section includes a conveyor with a plurality of openings in the conveyor.

3. The distribution system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the conveyor section is formed from a mesh material.

4. The distribution system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the vacuum is dynamically adjustable to accommodate a variety of objects presented to the distribution system.

5. The distribution system as claimed in claim 4 , wherein the distribution system further includes a perception unit that is directed toward the plurality of receiving units.

6. The distribution system as claimed in claim 4 , wherein the distribution system includes an adjustable vacuum control system.

7. The distribution system as claimed in claim 4 , wherein the distribution system includes an adjustable rotational speed control system.

8. The distribution system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the receiving units include at least one mobile carrier.

9. The distribution system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the receiving units include at least one chute.

10. The distribution system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the receiving units include at least one conveyor.

11. The distribution system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the distribution system includes three receiving units.

12. The distribution system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the vacuum roller rotates.

13. The distribution system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the vacuum roller is actively powered to rotate.

14. The distribution system as claimed in claim 1 , where in the vacuum roller is a passive roller.

15. The distribution system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the object processing system includes a plurality of object processing stations.

16. The distribution system as claimed in claim 15 , wherein the receiving units each direct any objects received by a respective receiving unit toward one of the plurality of object processing stations.

17. A distribution system in an induction system for use with an object processing system, said distribution system for providing dissimilar objects into one of a plurality of receiving units, said distribution system comprising a conveyor section that travels over a vacuum roller that is coupled to a vacuum source, said vacuum providing at the conveyor section a vacuum force on an object as the object falls over the vacuum roller toward one of the plurality of receiving units.

18. The distribution system as claimed in claim 17 , wherein the conveyor section includes a conveyor with a plurality of openings in the conveyor.

19. The distribution system as claimed in claim 17 , wherein the conveyor section is formed from a mesh material.

20. The distribution system as claimed in claim 17 , wherein the vacuum is dynamically adjustable to accommodate a variety of objects presented to the distribution system.

21. The distribution system as claimed in claim 20 , wherein the distribution system further includes a perception unit that is directed toward the plurality of receiving units.

22. The distribution system as claimed in claim 20 , wherein the distribution system includes an adjustable vacuum control system.

23. The distribution system as claimed in claim 20 , wherein the distribution system includes an adjustable rotational speed control system.

24. The distribution system as claimed in claim 17 , wherein the receiving units include at least one mobile carrier.

25. The distribution system as claimed in claim 17 , wherein the receiving units include at least one chute.

26. The distribution system as claimed in claim 17 , wherein the receiving units include at least one conveyor.

27. The distribution system as claimed in claim 17 , wherein the object processing system includes a plurality of object processing stations.

28. The distribution system as claimed in claim 27 , wherein the receiving units each direct any objects received by a respective receiving unit toward one of the plurality of object processing stations.

29. A method of providing distribution of a plurality of dissimilar objects in an induction system for use with an object processing system, said method comprising:

providing a conveyor section that travels over a vacuum roller that is coupled to a vacuum source that provides at the conveyor section a vacuum force on an object having a mass (m);

moving the conveyor section and the object around the vacuum roller; and

permitting the object to fall toward one of a plurality of receiving units based on both the object's mass (m) and the vacuum force applied to the object through the conveyor section.

30. The method as claimed in claim 29 , wherein the method further includes dynamically adjusting any of a vacuum control system that adjusts any of the vacuum source and a rotation speed control system that adjusts the rotational speed of the vacuum roller.

31. The method as claimed in claim 29 , wherein the method further includes perceiving perception data regarding the object.

32. The method as claimed in claim 29 , wherein the receiving units include at least one of any of a mobile carrier, a chute and a conveyor.

33. The method as claimed in claim 29 , wherein the receiving units each direct any objects received by a respective receiving unit toward one of a plurality of object processing stations.
