Abstract

A distribution system is disclosed for use in an induction system with an object processing system. The distribution system provides distribution of dissimilar objects into one of a plurality of receiving units. The distribution system includes an urging system for urging an object on a conveyor from the conveyor to one of a plurality of adjacent receiving stations via a receiving chute, wherein each receiving station is lower than the conveyor.

Claims (35)

1. A distribution system for distributing dissimilar objects, said distribution system comprising:

a feed conveyor including a weight sensing conveyor section that determines a weight of an object;

a plurality of receiving stations, wherein the plurality of receiving stations includes an output conveyor and a mobile carrier disposed on opposite sides of the feed conveyor; and

an urging system for selectively urging the object from the feed conveyor to either the output conveyor adjacent to one side of the feed conveyor via a first chute or to the mobile carrier adjacent to an opposite side of the feed conveyor via a second chute based on the weight of the object determined by the weight sensing conveyor section, wherein the output conveyor and the mobile carrier are disposed lower than the feed conveyor, wherein the weight sensing conveyor section includes a plurality of rollers mounted on at least one of a force torque sensor and a load cell for determining the weight of the object.

2. The distribution system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the urging system includes a forced air system for providing positive air flow at the object in either of two mutually opposing directions.

3. The distribution system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the urging system includes an air intake system for providing negative air flow at the object in either of two mutually opposing directions.

4. The distribution system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the urging system includes a bi-directional conveyor section.

5. The distribution system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the urging system includes at least one paddle.

The distribution system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein at least one chute among the first chute and the second chute is positioned above a second output conveyor and wherein the at least one chute includes at least one actuatable door that opens to drop an object therethrough onto the second output conveyor.

7. The distribution system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the mobile carrier includes a carrier body that supports a bin for receiving the object and a plurality of wheels coupled to the carrier body that are remotely controlled to move the mobile carrier among a plurality of tracks.

8. A distribution system comprising:

a conveyor;

a plurality of adjacent receiving stations disposed on opposite sides of the conveyor; and

an urging system comprising a plurality of air blowers disposed on opposite sides of the conveyor, wherein each blower is selectively operated based on identifying information associated with the object to provide a forced air flow in one of two mutually opposing directions to urge an object from the conveyor to one of the plurality of adjacent receiving stations, wherein each receiving station is lower than the conveyor such that the object falls to a respective receiving station when urged by the urging system to the respective receiving station;

wherein the conveyor includes a weight sensing conveyor section that determines a weight of the object, the weight sensing conveyor section including a plurality of rollers mounted on at least one of a force torque sensor and a load cell for determining the weight of the object; and

wherein each blower is selectively operated to provide the forced air flow in one of two opposing directions to urge the object from the conveyor to one of the plurality of adjacent receiving stations further based on the weight of the object determined by the weight sensing conveyor section.

9. The distribution system as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the urging system further comprises a plurality of vacuum sources that are selectively operated in combination with the plurality of air blowers to urge the object from the conveyor to one of the plurality of adjacent receiving stations.

10. The distribution system as claimed in claim 8 , further comprising a plurality of chutes that lead from the conveyor to the plurality of adjacent receiving stations.

11. The distribution system as claimed in claim 10 , wherein at least one chute among the plurality of chutes includes at least one actuatable door that is selectively opened to drop an object therethrough into a further receiving station positioned below the at least one actuatable door.

12. The distribution system as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the plurality of adjacent receiving stations includes a conveyor and a mobile carrier.

The distribution system as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the mobile carrier includes a carrier body that supports a bin for receiving the object and a plurality of wheels coupled to the carrier body that are remotely controlled to move the mobile carrier among a plurality of tracks in the object processing system.

14. A method of distributing objects in an induction system for use with an object processing system, said method comprising:

providing an object on a feed conveyor disposed between a plurality of adjacent receiving stations, wherein plurality of adjacent receiving stations includes at least one output conveyor and at least one mobile carrier;

determining a weight of the object on a weight sensing conveyor section of the feed conveyor; and

automatically urging the object from the feed conveyor to one of a plurality of adjacent receiving stations based on the determined weight of the object,

wherein the object is automatically urged from the feed conveyor to either the output conveyor adjacent to one side of the feed conveyor or to the mobile carrier adjacent to an opposite side of the feed conveyor,

wherein the mobile carrier includes a carrier body that supports a bin for receiving the object and a plurality of wheels coupled to the carrier body that are remotely controlled to move the mobile carrier among a plurality of tracks; and

wherein the weight sensing conveyor section includes a plurality of rollers mounted on at least one of a force torque sensor and a load cell for determining the weight of the object.

15. The method as claimed in claim 14 , wherein urging from the feed conveyor includes providing positive air flow at the object in either of two mutually opposing directions.

16. The method as claimed in claim 14 , wherein urging from the feed conveyor includes providing negative air flow at the object in either of two mutually opposing directions.

17. The method as claimed in claim 14 , wherein urging from the feed conveyor includes engaging a bi-directional conveyor section.

18. The method as claimed in claim 14 , wherein urging from the feed conveyor includes engaging at least one paddle.

19. The method as claimed in claim 14 , wherein each receiving station includes an associated at least one chute.

20. The method as claimed in claim 19 , wherein the at least one chute includes at least one actuatable door and the method further comprises opening the door to drop an object therethrough.

21. The method as claimed in claim 20 , wherein the at least one chute leads to one of the plurality of adjacent receiving stations, and is positioned above another of the adjacent receiving stations.
