Abstract

A battery pack and charger system includes a first battery pack having a first set of battery cells and configured to provide only a first operating voltage and a second battery pack having a second set of battery cells and configured to provide the first operating voltage and a second operating voltage that is different from the first operating voltage and a battery pack charger configured to be able to charge the first battery pack and the second battery pack.

Claims (24)

1. A battery pack and charger system, comprising:

a first battery pack comprising a first plurality of battery cells and configured to provide only a first operating voltage and be charged to a first charging voltage when the first battery pack is fully charged;

a second battery pack comprising a second plurality of battery cells and configured to provide the first operating voltage and a second operating voltage that is different from the first operating voltage and be charged to the first charging voltage when the second battery pack is fully charged; and

a battery pack charger configured to receive the first battery pack and the second battery pack such that the battery pack charger charges the received first battery pack to the first charging voltage when the first battery pack is fully charged and the received second battery pack to the first charging voltage when the second battery pack is fully charged.

2. The battery pack and charger system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first charging voltage is approximately 18 to 20 volts.

3. The battery pack and charger system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first charging voltage is approximately 36 to 40 volts.

4. The battery pack and charger system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first charging voltage is approximately 56 to 60 volts.

5. The battery pack and charger system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the second operating voltage is a whole number multiple of the first operating voltage.

6. A battery pack and charger system, comprising:

a first battery pack operable in a single operating state in which the first battery pack provides only a first operating voltage;

a second battery pack operable in a first operating state in which the second battery pack provides the first operating voltage and in a second operating state in which the second battery pack provides a second operating voltage that is different than the first operating voltage; and

a battery pack charger configured to charge the first battery pack to the first operating voltage when the first battery pack is fully charged and the second battery pack to the first operating voltage when the second battery pack is fully charged.

7. The battery pack and charger system, as recited in claim 6 , wherein the first operating voltage is approximately 18 to 20 volts.

8. The battery pack and charger system, as recited in claim 6 , wherein the first operating voltage is approximately 54 to 60 volts.

9. The battery pack and charger system, as recited in claim 6 , wherein the first operating voltage is approximately 18 to 20 volts and the second operating voltage is approximately 54 to 60 volts.

10. The battery pack and charger system, as recited in claim 6 , wherein the second operating voltage is a whole number multiple of the first operating voltage.

11. The battery pack and charger system, as recited in claim 6 , wherein the first operating voltage is approximately 18 to 20 volts and the second operating voltage is between approximately 36 and 60 volts.

12. A battery pack and charger system, comprising:

a first battery pack providing only a first rated voltage;

a second battery pack including a set of battery cells, the set of battery cells including a first subset of battery cells and a second subset of battery cells, the second battery pack providing the first rated voltage when the first subset of battery cells and the second subset of battery cells are connected in parallel and providing a second rated voltage that is different than the first rated voltage when the first subset of battery cells and the second subset of battery cells are connected in series; and

a battery pack charger configured to receive the first battery pack and the second battery pack such that the battery pack charger identifies both the received first battery pack and the received second battery pack as a battery pack that provides the first rated voltage and charges both the received first battery pack and the received second battery pack to the first rated voltage.

13. The battery pack and charger system, as recited in claim 12 , wherein the battery pack charger is configured to charge the first battery pack and the second battery pack to the first rated voltage when fully charged.

14. The battery pack and charger system, as recited in claim 12 , wherein the second rated voltage is a whole number multiple of the first rated voltage.

15. The battery pack and charger system, as recited in claim 12 , wherein the first rated voltage is approximately 18 to 20 volts and the second rated voltage is approximately 36 to 40 volts.
