Abstract

A mobile device with a first transceiver, a second transceiver, one or more processors, and memory bridges communications between an offline retail machine with a short-range communication capability and a remote server by obtaining via the first transceiver a single-use request code from an information packet broadcast by the offline retail machine; transmitting via the second transceiver the single-use request code to a remote server; obtaining via the second transceiver from the remote server a grant token including the single-use request code; detecting a trigger condition for initiating provision of a product or service by the offline retail machine; and in response to detecting the trigger condition, initiating performance of the provision of the product or service by transmitting the grant token to the offline retail machine via the first transceiver.

Claims (62)

1. A mobile device, comprising:

a first transceiver;

a second transceiver;

one or more processors; and

memory storing one or more programs, including an application, that when executed by the one or more processors cause the one or more processors to perform intermediary communications operations between an offline retail machine with a short-range communication capability and a remote server, the intermediary communications operations including:

receiving first information from the short-range communication capability of the offline retail machine via the first transceiver;

identifying the offline retail machine based on the received first information;

obtaining via the first transceiver a single-use request code from an information packet broadcast by the offline retail machine as part of the first information;

transmitting via the second transceiver the single-use request code to a remote server;

obtaining via the second transceiver from the remote server a grant token including the single-use request code and an amount of authorized funds;

detecting a trigger condition for obtaining a product or service from the offline retail machine; and

in response to detecting the trigger condition, initiating provision of the product or service by transmitting the grant token to the offline retail machine via the first transceiver.

2. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the information packet broadcast by the offline retail machine further includes machine status information indicating one or more states of a payment module of the offline retail machine; and wherein the intermediary communications operations further comprise:

sending, to the server, the machine status information from the information packet via the second transceiver.

3. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the information packet broadcast by the offline retail machine further includes a first zone threshold criterion; and

wherein transmitting the single-use request code comprises transmitting, to the server, the single-use request code via the second transceiver in accordance with a determination that the first zone threshold criterion is satisfied.

4. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the information packet broadcast by the offline retail machine further includes a payment zone threshold criterion; and

wherein detecting the trigger condition comprises determining whether the payment zone threshold criterion is satisfied.

5. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the intermediary communications operations further comprise:

selecting a current mode of operation for the application that is executing on the mobile device, the current mode of operation selected from at least (i) a manual mode of operation for the application in which user input is provided at a user interface of the application to initiate the single-use request, and (ii) a hands-free mode of operation in which no user input is required to initiate the single-use request.

6. The mobile device of claim 5 , wherein:

when the current mode is the manual mode, detecting the trigger condition comprises detecting a predefined gesture at a user interface of the application; and

when the current mode is the hands-free mode, detecting the trigger condition comprises detecting that the device is within a predefined distance of the offline retail machine.

7. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing one or more programs for execution by one or more processors of a mobile device with a first transceiver and a second transceiver, wherein the one or more programs, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the mobile device to perform intermediary communications operations between an offline retail machine with a short-range communication capability and a remote server, the intermediary communications operations comprising:

receiving first information from the short-range communication capability of the offline retail machine via the first transceiver;

identifying the offline retail machine based on the received first information;

obtaining via the first transceiver a single-use request code from an information packet broadcast by the offline retail machine as part of the first information;

transmitting via the second transceiver the single-use request code to a remote server;

obtaining via the second transceiver from the remote server a grant token including the single-use request code and an amount of authorized funds;

detecting a trigger condition for obtaining a product or service from the offline retail machine; and

in response to detecting the trigger condition, initiating provision of the product or service by transmitting the grant token to the offline retail machine via the first transceiver.

8. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the information packet broadcast by the offline retail machine further includes machine status information indicating one or more states of a payment module of the offline retail machine; and wherein the intermediary communications operations further comprise:

sending, to the server, the machine status information from the information packet via the second transceiver.

9. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the information packet broadcast by the offline retail machine further includes a first zone threshold criterion; and

wherein transmitting the single-use request code comprises transmitting, to the server, the single-use request code via the second transceiver in accordance with a determination that the first zone threshold criterion is satisfied.

10. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the information packet broadcast by the offline retail machine further includes a payment zone threshold criterion; and

wherein detecting the trigger condition comprises determining whether the payment zone threshold criterion is satisfied.

11. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the intermediary communications operations further comprise:

selecting a current mode of operation for the application that is executing on the mobile device, the current mode of operation selected from at least (i) a manual mode of operation for the application in which user input is provided at a user interface of the application to initiate the single-use request, and (ii) a hands-free mode of operation in which no user input is required to initiate the single-use request.

12. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein:

when the current mode is the manual mode, detecting the trigger condition comprises detecting a predefined gesture at a user interface of the application; and

when the current mode is the hands-free mode, detecting the trigger condition comprises detecting that the device is within a predefined distance of the offline retail machine.

13. A method of bridging communications between an offline retail machine with a short-range communication capability and a remote server, the method comprising:

at an application executing on a mobile device with one or more processors, memory, a first transceiver and a second transceiver:

receiving first information from the short-range communication capability of the offline retail machine via the first transceiver;

identifying the offline retail machine based on the received first information;

obtaining via the first transceiver a single-use request code from an information packet broadcast by the offline retail machine as part of the first information;

transmitting via the second transceiver the single-use request code to a remote server;

obtaining via the second transceiver from the remote server a grant token including the single-use request code and an amount of authorized funds;

detecting a trigger condition for obtaining a product or service from the offline retail machine; and

in response to detecting the trigger condition, initiating provision of the product or service by transmitting the grant token to the offline retail machine via the first transceiver.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the information packet broadcast by the offline retail machine further includes machine status information indicating one or more states of a payment module of the offline retail machine; and wherein the method further comprises:
