Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a software program that displays both a volume as images and segmentation results as surface models in 3D. Multiple 2D slices are extracted from the 3D volume. The 2D slices may be interactively rotated by the user to best follow an oblique structure. The 2D slices can “cut” the surface models from the segmentation so that only half of the models are displayed. The border curves resulting from the cuts are displayed in the 2D slices. The user may click a point on the surface model to designate a landmark point. The corresponding location of the point is highlighted in the 2D slices. A 2D slice can be reoriented such that the line lies in the slice. The user can then further evaluate or refine the landmark points based on both surface and image information.

Claims (43)

1. A method for integrating a plurality of three-dimensional models, the method comprising:

identifying a plurality of points in a first three-dimensional model via a graphical user interface;

determining an intersection of the first three-dimensional model and a second three-dimensional model, wherein the intersection divides the second three-dimensional model into a first partial surface and a second partial surface; and

generating an integrated image for display on the graphical user interface, wherein (i) the integrated image includes the first three-dimensional model and only the first partial surface of the second three-dimensional model and (ii) the integrated image identifies the intersection.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

creating the second three-dimensional model based on the first three-dimensional model.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

generating the first three-dimensional model from a set of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data slices.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first three-dimensional model is a three-dimensional volume image.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second three-dimensional model is a polygonal representation of a patient's joint.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying one or more landmark points in the integrated image.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying one or more ligament attachment points in the integrated image.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying a mechanical axis of a patient's joint in the integrated image.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the intersection of the first three-dimensional model and the second three-dimensional model is determined in real-time in response to a user's manipulation of at least one of the first three-dimensional model or the second three-dimensional model via the graphical user interface.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the intersection is a border curve.

11. A system for integrating a plurality of three-dimensional models, the system comprising:

a display;

at least one processor; and

at least one memory having a plurality of instructions stored thereon that, in response to execution by the at least one processor, causes the system to:

identify a plurality of points in a first three-dimensional model;

determine an intersection of the first three-dimensional model and a second three-dimensional model, wherein the intersection divides the second three-dimensional model into a first partial surface and a second partial surface; and

generate an integrated image on the display, wherein the integrated image includes at least a portion of the first three-dimensional model and at least a portion of second three-dimensional model and the integrated image identifies the intersection.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of instructions further causes the system to:

create the second three-dimensional model based on the first three-dimensional model.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of instructions further causes the system to:

generate the first three-dimensional model from a set of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data slices.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first three-dimensional model is a three-dimensional volume image.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the second three-dimensional model is a polygonal representation of a patient's joint.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of instructions further causes the system to:

identify one or more landmark points in the integrated image.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of instructions further causes the system to:

identify one or more ligament attachment points in the integrated image.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of instructions further causes the system to:

identify a mechanical axis of a patient's joint in the integrated image.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of instructions that cause the system to determine an intersection of the first three-dimensional model and a second three-dimensional model include instructions that cause the system to:

determine the intersection of the first three-dimensional model and a second three-dimensional model in real-time in response to a user's manipulation of at least one of the first three-dimensional model or the second three-dimensional model via a graphical user interface on the display.

20. A method for integrating multiple three-dimensional models, the method comprising:

presenting a plurality of three-dimensional models in a graphical user interface, wherein the plurality of three-dimensional models comprises a first three-dimensional model and one or more second three-dimensional models;

determining an intersection of the plurality of three-dimensional models in response to a user's manipulation of at least one of the plurality of three-dimensional models in the graphical user interface, wherein the intersection divides the first three-dimensional model into a first partial surface and a second partial surface; and

generating an integrated image for display in the graphical user interface, wherein the integrated image includes only the first partial surface of the first three-dimensional model and at least a portion of each second three-dimensional model.
