Abstract

A fiber optic plug, suitable for multi-core fiber (MCF), is structured to hold satellite cores of the MCF in a precise angular positions so as to attain suitable alignment with satellite cores of a mating connector. The plug includes features to permit a ferrule holding the MCF to move longitudinally relative to the connector's housing, so that a spring may control a mating force to an abutting ferrule of a mating connector. The ferrule may be held by ferrule barrel having splines projecting away from an outer peripheral surface. The splines may slide longitudinally within notches of the connector housing or a strength member attached to the connector housing. The notches and splines have a tight tolerance, so that the satellite cores remain in a desired, set angular position.

Claims (61)

1. A method of making a multi-core fiber connector comprising:

providing a ferrule;

securing a multi-core fiber within the ferrule;

providing a ferrule barrel including at least one spline extending away from an outer peripheral surface of the ferrule barrel, the ferrule barrel surrounding at least a portion of the ferrule;

attaching the ferrule barrel to the ferrule;

providing a strength member to a rear of the ferrule barrel, the strength member including at least one notch extending through an outer peripheral surface of the strength member;

receiving the at least one spline within the at least one notch;

moving the at least one spline within the at least one notch in a first direction which is substantially parallel to an extension direction of the ferrule;

providing a connector housing having an inner cavity;

locating the inner cavity to a front of the ferrule barrel;

receiving the ferrule barrel and at least a portion of the strength member within the inner cavity of the connector housing; and

attaching the strength member directly or indirectly to the connector housing.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein attaching the ferrule barrel to the ferrule includes applying an epoxy between the ferrule barrel and the ferrule.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein attaching the ferrule barrel to the ferrule includes a press fit between the ferrule barrel and the ferrule.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein attaching the strength member directly or indirectly to the connector housing includes:

aligning the at least one notch and the at least one spline to one of four corners of a rectangular cross section of the connector housing.

5. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

abutting a front face of the ferrule barrel and a front face of the strength member to a ridge or ledge placed at a depth within the inner cavity of the connector housing, prior to attaching the strength member directly or indirectly to the connector housing.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one spline includes four splines at intervals of ninety degrees apart and extending away from the outer peripheral surface of the ferrule barrel;

wherein the at least one notch includes four notches at intervals of ninety degrees apart and extending through the outer peripheral surface of the strength member; and

wherein receiving the at least one spline within the at least one notch includes receiving the four splines within the four notches.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the inner cavity of the connector housing includes four indentations; and further comprising:

accommodating any portions of the four splines, which extend outwardly of the four notches, within the four indentations, wherein the four indentations of the inner cavity are located at four corners of a rectangular cross section of the connector housing.

8. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the four notches permit reciprocally moving the ferrule barrel in the extension direction of the ferrule, but limit rotation of the ferrule barrel around the extension direction of the ferrule.

9. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the width of each notch is not more than 0.002 inches greater than the width of the spline received therein.

10. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

providing a tube between the strength member and the multi-core fiber to the rear of the ferrule barrel;

encircling a spring around the tube;

abutting one end of the spring to a backside of the ferrule barrel and abutting the other end of the spring to a portion of the strength member; and

biasing the ferrule barrel away from the portion of the strength member using the spring.

11. The method according to claim 10 , further comprising:

providing an extender adjacent to the strength member;

contacting the strength member to the extender; and

attaching the extender to a portion of the inner cavity of the connector housing.

12. A method of making a multi-core fiber connector comprising:

providing a ferrule;

securing a multi-core fiber within the ferrule;

providing a ferrule barrel including one of a spline or a notch, the ferrule barrel surrounding at least a portion of the ferrule;

attaching the ferrule barrel to the ferrule;

providing a strength member to a rear of the ferrule barrel, the strength member including the other of a spline or a notch;

receiving the spline within the notch;

moving the spline within the notch in a first direction which is substantially parallel to an extension direction of the ferrule;

providing a connector housing having an inner cavity;

locating the inner cavity to a front of the ferrule barrel;

receiving the ferrule barrel and at least a portion of the strength member within the inner cavity of the connector housing; and

attaching the strength member directly or indirectly to the connector housing.

13. The method according to claim 12 , further comprising:

abutting a front face of the ferrule barrel and a front face of the strength member to a ridge or ledge placed at a depth within the inner cavity of the connector housing, prior to attaching the strength member directly or indirectly to the connector housing.

14. The method according to claim 12 , further comprising:

providing a tube between the strength member and the multi-core fiber to the rear of the ferrule barrel;

encircling a spring around the tube;

abutting one end of the spring to a backside of the ferrule barrel and abutting the other end of the spring to a portion of the strength member; and

biasing the ferrule barrel away from the portion of the strength member using the spring.

15. The method according to claim 14 , further comprising:

providing an extender adjacent to the strength member;

contacting the strength member to the extender; and

attaching the extender to a portion of the inner cavity of the connector housing.

16. The method according to claim 12 , wherein attaching the ferrule barrel to the ferrule includes applying an epoxy between the ferrule barrel and the ferrule.

17. The method according to claim 12 , wherein attaching the ferrule barrel to the ferrule includes a press fit between the ferrule barrel and the ferrule.

18. The method according to claim 12 , wherein the notch permits reciprocally moving the ferrule barrel in the extension direction of the ferrule, but limits rotation of the ferrule barrel around the extension direction of the ferrule.

19. The method according to claim 18 , wherein a width of the notch is not more than 0.002 inches greater than a width of the spline received therein.
