Abstract

A medical instrument may include multiple joint members and at least two pairs of tendons connected with the joint members and adapted to move at least one of the joint members relative to at least one other joint member. Each joint member may include a main structural body that may be a single piece and includes at least one convex contact surface. A main portion of each tendon contacts the medical instrument only on the convex contact surfaces.

Claims (21)

1. A medical instrument for robotic surgery, the medical instrument comprising:

a frame;

a shaft having a first end and a second end, wherein the first end of the shaft is attached to the frame;

a jointed device coupled to the second end of the shaft, the jointed device comprising;

a first link;

a second link connected to the first link by a first rotational joint;

a third link connected to the second link by a second rotational joint and comprising a wrist member having a pitch axis of joint movement and a yaw axis of joint movement; and

a fourth link connected to the third link by a third rotational joint; and

two pairs of tendons extending from the frame, through the shaft, to connect with the jointed device,

wherein at least one of the two pairs of tendons is attached to the fourth link and is configured to move the fourth link with respect to the third link by pulling the on fourth link,

wherein each tendon of the two pairs of tendons comprises;

a first tendon endpoint coupled with the frame;

a second tendon endpoint attached to at least one of the fourth link or the third link; and

a main portion, extending between the first tendon endpoint and the second tendon endpoint;

wherein each of the first link, the second link and the third link comprises a main structural body with a convex, ruled surface, and

wherein the main portion of each tendon of the two pairs of tendons contacts the jointed device only on the convex, ruled surfaces of the first link, the second link and the third link.

2. The medical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the second link is an elbow member comprising multiple convex, ruled surfaces, each of which is parallel to either the pitch axis of joint movement or the yaw axis of joint movement.

3. The medical instrument of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the two pairs of tendons is attached to the third link and is configured to move the third link with respect to the second link by pulling on the third link.

4. The medical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the main structural body of each of the first link, the second link, and the third link comprises a single piece that includes the convex, ruled surface.

5. The medical instrument of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the two pairs of tendons is attached to the fourth link and is configured to move the fourth link around the third rotational joint.

6. The medical instrument of claim 1 , wherein each of the second link and the third link has a pair of tendon termination seats, wherein each tendon termination seat is positioned to support each tendon so that its tendon path is stationary with respect to a closest link to the tendon termination seat.
