Abstract

Methods, apparatus and articles of manufacture to monitor streaming media are disclosed. Example media monitoring methods disclosed herein include presenting streaming media accessed via a network, extracting metering metadata from a metadata channel associated with a transport stream, the transport stream providing the streaming media to a media presentation device, in response to a detected event, reporting the metering metadata to a server, accessing an identification of secondary media for presentation responsive to the reporting of the metering metadata, and presenting the identified secondary media.

Claims (35)

1. A media presentation device comprising:

a display to present streaming media accessed via a network; and

at least one processor to execute computer readable instructions to:

send a request to a media provider that is to cause the media provider to initiate transmission of a transport stream that is to provide the streaming media to the media presentation device;

extract first metering metadata from a data file to be received by the media presentation device after the transmission of the transport stream is initiated by the media provider but before receipt by the media presentation device of the transport stream that is to provide the streaming media to the media presentation device, the data file associated with the transport stream;

extract second metering metadata from one or more fields of the transport stream;

report a combination of the first metering metadata extracted from the data file received before the transport stream and the second metering metadata extracted from the one or more data fields of the transport stream to a server using at least one of a post request or a get request including the combination of the first metering metadata and the second metering metadata as a parameter, the combination of the first metering metadata and the second metering metadata reported in response to a detected event;

access an identification of secondary media for presentation on the media presentation device responsive to reporting the combination of the first metering metadata and the second metering metadata; and

present the identified secondary media.

2. The media presentation device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the post request or the get request includes additional data separate from the first metering metadata and the second metering metadata.

3. The media presentation device of claim 2 , wherein the additional data includes information describing usage of the media presentation device.

The media presentation device of claim 1 , wherein the detected event includes initiation of a presentation of new media, and the at least one processor is to report the combination of the first metering metadata and the second metering metadata in response to the initiation of the presentation of the new media.

5. The media presentation device of claim 1 , wherein the detected event includes identification of new metering metadata by the at least one processor.

6. A method for monitoring media presentations, the method comprising:

sending a request to a media provider that is to cause the media provider to initiate transmission of a transport stream that is to provide streaming media to a media presentation device via a network;

extracting first metering metadata from a data file received by the media presentation device after the transmission of the transport stream is initiated by the media provider but before receipt by the media presentation device of the transport stream providing the streaming media to the media presentation device, the data file associated with the transport stream;

extracting second metering metadata from one or more fields of the transport stream;

in response to a detected event, reporting a combination of the first metering metadata extracted from the data file received before the transport stream and the second metering metadata extracted from the one or more data fields of the transport stream to a server using at least one of a post request or a get request including the combination of the first metering metadata and the second metering metadata as a parameter;

accessing an identification of secondary media for presentation responsive to the reporting of the combination of the first metering metadata and the second metering metadata; and

presenting the streaming media and the identified secondary media.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the at least one of the post request or the get request includes additional data separate from the first metering metadata and the second metering metadata.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the additional data includes information describing usage of the media presentation device.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the detected event includes initiation of a presentation of new media, wherein the reporting of the combination of the first metering metadata and the second metering metadata is performed in response to the initiation of the presentation of the new media.

10. The method of claim 6 , wherein the detected event includes identifying new metering metadata.

11. At least one non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed, cause at least one processor to at least:

send a request to a media provider that is to cause the media provider to initiate transmission of a transport stream that is to provide streaming media to a media presentation device via a network;

extract first metering metadata from a data file to be received by the media presentation device after the transmission of the transport stream is initiated by the media provider but before receipt by the media presentation device of the transport stream that is to provide the streaming media to the media presentation device, the data file associated with the transport stream;

extract second metering metadata from one or more fields of the transport stream;

in response to a detected event, report a combination of the first metering metadata extracted from the data file received before the transport stream and the second metering metadata extracted from the one or more data fields of the transport stream to a server using at least one of a post request or a get request including the combination of the first metering metadata and the second metering metadata as a parameter;

access an identification of secondary media for presentation responsive to the reporting of the combination of the first metering metadata and the second metering metadata; and

present the streaming media and the identified secondary media.

12. The at least one non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the at least one of the post request or the get request includes additional data separate from the first metering metadata and the second metering metadata.

13. The at least one non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the additional data includes information describing usage of the media presentation device.

The at least one non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the at least one processor to detect initiation of a presentation of new media, wherein the combination of the first metering metadata and the second metering metadata is reported in response to the initiation of the presentation of the new media.

15. The at least one non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the at least one processor to detect the event by identifying new metering metadata.
