Abstract

An example implementation may involve a group of wearable playback devices including a first wearable playback device and a second wearable playback device. The wearable playback devices render multi-channel audio content according to particular playback responsibilities in the group. When a failure or other issue with the second wearable playback device occurs, the first playback device assumes at least part of the playback responsibility of the second playback device.

3. The media playback system of claim 1 , wherein the particular playback configuration is a stereo configuration and the multi-channel audio content is stereo audio content, the one or more first audio channels comprising a left channel and one or more second audio channels comprising a right channel, and wherein configuring the first wearable playback device to additionally render at least the portion of the one or more second audio channels comprises configuring the first wearable playback device to render the left and right channels of the stereo audio content.

4. The media playback system of claim 1 , wherein detecting the failure of the second wearable playback device comprises detecting that the second wearable playback device is no longer connected to the first wearable playback device.

5. The media playback system of claim 1 , wherein the media playback system connects to a mobile device via a network, wherein detecting the failure of the second wearable playback device comprises detecting that the second wearable playback device is no longer connected to the mobile device via the network.

6. The media playback system of claim 1 , wherein detecting the failure of the second wearable playback device comprises receiving, via a network interface from the second wearable playback device, status information indicating that the second wearable playback device is in a failure status.

7. The media playback system of claim 1 , wherein the first wearable playback device and the second wearable playback device are configured to be worn on a human head.

8. A method to be performed by a media playback system comprising a first wearable playback device and a second wearable playback device, the method comprising:

rendering multi-channel audio content as a particular playback configuration, wherein the first wearable playback device is configured to render one or more first audio channels of the multi-channel audio content and the second wearable playback device is configured to render one or more second audio channels of the multi-channel audio content, wherein one of the first wearable playback device and the second wearable playback device is configured as coordinator of the particular playback configuration to send playback and timing information to other wearable playback devices of the particular playback configuration;

while rendering the multi-channel audio content as the particular playback configuration, detecting a failure of the second wearable playback device; and

based on detecting the failure of the second wearable playback device, configuring the first wearable playback device to additionally render at least a portion of the one or more second audio channels.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the particular playback configuration is a surround sound configuration and the multi-channel audio content is a surround sound audio track, the one or more first audio channels comprising a first surround channel and the one or more second audio channels comprising a second surround channel, and wherein configuring the first wearable playback device to additionally render at least the portion of the one or more second audio channels comprises configuring the first wearable playback device to additionally render the second surround channel.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the particular playback configuration is a stereo configuration and the multi-channel audio content is stereo audio content, the one or more first audio channels comprising a left channel and one or more second audio channels comprising a right channel, and wherein configuring the first wearable playback device to additionally render at least the portion of the one or more second audio channels comprises configuring the first wearable playback device to render the left and right channels of the stereo audio content.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein detecting the failure of the second wearable playback device comprises detecting that the second wearable playback device is no longer connected to the first wearable playback device.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the media playback system connects to a mobile device via a network, wherein detecting the failure of the second wearable playback device comprises detecting that the second wearable playback device is no longer connected to the mobile device via the network.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein detecting the failure of the second wearable playback device comprises receiving, via a network interface from the second wearable playback device, status information indicating that the second wearable playback device is in a failure status.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first wearable playback device and the second wearable playback device are configured to be worn on a human head.

15. A first wearable playback device of a media playback system comprising the first wearable playback device and a second wearable playback device, the first wearable playback device comprising:

a network interface;

an audio transducer;

one or more processors;

a housing, the housing carrying at least the network interface, the audio transducer, the one or more processors, and data storage having stored therein instructions executable by the one or more processors to cause the first wearable playback device to perform operations comprising:

rendering multi-channel audio content as a particular playback configuration, wherein the first wearable playback device is configured to render one or more first audio channels of the multi-channel audio content and the second wearable playback device is configured to render one or more second audio channels of the multi-channel audio content, wherein one of the first wearable playback device and the second wearable playback device is configured as coordinator of the particular playback configuration to send playback and timing information to other wearable playback devices of the particular playback configuration;
