Digital thermal binder and powder printing
A method of forming a digital print on a surface by applying powder of dry ink including colourants on the surface, bonding a part of the dry ink powder to the surface by a digital heating print head such that the digital print is formed by the bonded dry ink colourants and removing non-bonded dry ink from the surface.
1. An equipment for providing a digital print on a surface, comprising a dry ink application station, a heat bonding station and a dry ink removal station, wherein:
the dry ink application station is configured to apply dry ink comprising colorants on the surface;
the heat bonding station comprises a heating print head and is configured to bond a part of the dry ink to the surface by heat such that the digital print is formed by bonded colorants of the dry ink; and
the dry ink removal station is configured to remove non-bonded colorants from the surface.
2. The equipment according to claim 1 , wherein the heating print head comprises a plurality of heating elements.
3. The equipment according to claim 1 , wherein the heating print head is configured to apply direct heat.
4. The equipment according to claim 1 , wherein the heating print head is configured to apply heat directly on portions of the dry ink after the application of the dry ink, or to apply heat on the surface prior to the application of the dry ink.
5. The equipment according to claim 1 , wherein a heating print head is configured to apply indirect heat.
6. The equipment according to claim 1 , further comprising a transfer surface configured to heat the dry ink, wherein the heating print head is configured to provide heat through the transfer surface or on the dry ink applied on the transfer surface.
7. The equipment according to claim 1 , wherein the heating print head is configured to apply heat on a heat transfer foil.
8. The equipment according to claim 7 , wherein the heat transfer foil is configured to be in contact with the heating print head and the dry ink.
9. The equipment according to claim 7 , wherein the heat transfer foil comprises individual elements with high thermal conductivity embedded in a heat insulating carrier for preventing heat from spreading between the individual elements.
10. The equipment according to claim 7 , wherein the heat transfer foil is a copper or aluminum foil.
11. The equipment according to claim 1 , wherein the surface or the dry ink comprises a thermosensitive binder.
12. The equipment according to claim 1 , wherein the surface or the dry ink comprises a thermosetting resin, a thermoplastic resin, or a wax.
13. The equipment according to claim 1 , wherein the heat bonding station is configured to bond the dry ink at temperatures of 200-250° C.
14. The equipment according to claim 1 , wherein the heat bonding station comprises heating elements arranged on an essentially flat surface or arranged on a cylinder configured to rotate when a surface with dry ink is displaced under the heating print head.
15. The equipment according to claim 1 , further comprising a pre-pressing unit, or wherein the equipment is configured to apply vacuum on the lower side of the surface or to apply oscillation for increasing the contact between the dry ink and the surface during the heat bonding.
16. The equipment according to claim 1 , wherein the surface is a part of a panel.
17. The equipment according to claim 1 , wherein the equipment is configured to apply heat and pressure for permanently bonding the bonded colorants to the surface.
