Abstract

An in-wheel suspension system includes an assembly with a main arm that is pivotally connected at a connection point on the main arm to a shaft point of a wheel, a first linkage unit pivotally connected at one end to a first end of the main arm, and a second linkage unit pivotally connected at one end to a second end of the main arm. At least one second end of the first linkage unit and at least one second end of the second linkage unit, that are not connected to the main arm, are pivotally connectable each to a reference frame at a defined distance between them, such as to form a substantially “Z” like shape.

Claims (26)

1. An in-wheel suspension assembly, comprising:

a main arm pivotally connectable at a connection point of the main arm to a shaft point of a wheel;

a first linkage unit pivotally connected at its first end to a first end of the main arm and pivotally connectable at its at least one second end to a reference frame to rotate about a first axis; and

a second linkage unit pivotally connected at its first end to a second end of the main arm and pivotally connectable at its at least one second end to the reference frame to rotate about a second axis, wherein the first axis and the second axis are at a defined distance between each other;

wherein the connection point of the main arm is movable only along a substantially straight line.

2. The in-wheel suspension assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first axis and the second axis are off parallel with respect to each other.

3. The in-wheel suspension assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one second end of the first linkage unit and the at least one second end of the second linkage unit are pivotally connectable to the reference frame so as the main arm, the first linkage unit and the second linkage unit form a substantially “Z” shape.

4. The in-wheel suspension assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a third linkage unit pivotally connected at its first end to the main arm at a defined location and pivotally connectable at its second end to the reference frame.

5. The in-wheel suspension assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first linkage unit and the second linkage unit each comprises one or more linking elements and two or more pivoting connections.

6. The in-wheel suspension assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a shock absorbing unit.

7. The in-wheel suspension assembly of claim 6 , wherein the shock absorbing unit is connected to at least one of the first linkage unit and the second linkage unit to cause the shock absorbing unit to alter its length in response to a change in a position of at least one of: the main arm, the first linkage unit and the second linkage unit.

8. The in-wheel suspension assembly of claim 6 , wherein the shock absorbing unit is connected to one of pivoted connections of at least one of: the main arm, the first linkage unit and the second linkage unit.

9. The in-wheel suspension assembly of claim 1 , wherein the reference frame is one of: a chassis of the vehicle and an element connectable to the chassis of the vehicle.

10. The in-wheel suspension assembly of claim 1 , wherein a maximal movement of the at least one second end of the first linkage unit or the at least one second end of the second linkage unit with respect to the connection point of the main arm is less than a radius of a rim of the wheel.

11. A wheel comprising:

a rim; and

an in-wheel suspension assembly according to claim 1 assembled to the rim.

12. The wheel of claim 11 , wherein the main arm, the first linkage unit and the second linkage unit of the in-wheel suspension assembly are fully accommodated within the rim.

13. A vehicle comprising:

two or more wheels;

the reference frame; and

one or more in-wheel suspension assemblies each according to claim 1 .

14. The in-wheel suspension assembly of claim 1 ,

wherein the main arm, the first linkage unit and the second linkage unit of the in-wheel suspension assembly are fully accommodatable within a diameter of a rim of the wheel.

15. The in-wheel suspension assembly of claim 1 , wherein an overall width of the in-wheel suspension assembly exceeds a width of a rim of the wheel.

16. The in-wheel suspension assembly of claim 1 , wherein an overall width of the in-wheel suspension assembly does not exceed a width of a rim of the wheel.
